I'm currently looking after my student nephew who got a knock to the head at rugby a week ago. His executive function is shot, poor memory, depressed and difficulty following conversations and instructions, Does anyone have any experience of this? I'm keeping him rested, fed and trying a regular sleep cycle. His CT scan was clear but right now no idea if he can go back to uni.

Have you spoken to a GP?
it can take a while to recover from even a mild concussion, a week is not very long at all
Hope he feels better soon

Yes we've seen a GP and have a follow up next week but it's just very tricky with a 19year old who needs a quiet dark room for an unknown amount of time. How much time off the Uni will allow is also uncertain.

Gosh, it’s hard and I hope he gets better soon. Took DC about 6 weeks to recover but each person’s trajectory can be so different. Take it day by day, don’t try to rush. Inform uni and keep them updated, especially if as a phased in return is needed this will allow for accommodations eg reduced workload and hours. We were advised 2 days of doing as little as possible and then to gradually bring in gentle mental stimulation and exercise and to not keep in a dark and isolated room. Concussion treatment has changed a lot in the last decade. Is there a concussion clinic near you?
