Pain/Cramp in the butt

Hello

Just about to call the GP but just looking to see if anyone has experienced anything similar.

Often, I get dull cramps and aching in my bum and this has worsened since falling pregnant. I have IBS and wake up every morning with really bad gas so I think this may be related

The pain is more uncomfortable than sore and it's usually in one spot (right hand side) and worse when I sit back and lean into it. As I say, about to phone GP for advice but interested to see if others have experienced this

Piles? They worsen in pregnancy.

DBS94 · 30/09/2022 10:29

@Donotgogentle I did consider this, I've never had piles before. I'll see what GP says - thank you!

Sciatica?

HappyHamsters · 30/09/2022 10:31

Could it be sciatica if its in the cheek or yes, maybe piles

DBS94 · 30/09/2022 10:33

I'd say it's more in the bum and feels like it's coming from inside. A literal pain in the bum 😂

Proctalgia is pain due to a spasm of the pelvic floor muscles, the muscles of the anal sphincter, or the muscles of the rectum. This causes severe stabbing pain like a knife sticking into the rectum. This type of pain may originate without warning. It may vary in severity and duration.

This OP?

DBS94 · 30/09/2022 10:39

@Suzi888 it can sometimes be very severe and sudden but other times just a dull ache that's on and off throughout the day. I've had a bit of constipation since the start of pregnancy so I wonder if it's related to that

I get this fairly frequently - it feels rather like cramp and can last up to about half an hour, usually comes on at night, but occasionally in the daytime. I asked my GP about it some time ago and she called it some name I forget, but said it was quite harmless and a bowel movement would ease it, if possible. I normally take a couple of paracetamol and it goes away. I do have haemhorroids and don't know if it is to do with this.

Could be sciatica (I had a bit of this pain when pregnant) or the piriformis muscle.

Some gentle stretches often help.

Also if you have a tennis ball or similar putting that under your bum cheek while you lie on the floor can really hit the sore spot and give it a bit of a massage.

I think one for the doc, as you get it on and off throughout the day, that must be very unpleasant.

Could it be trapped wind- that’s very painful.

Rosehugger · 30/09/2022 10:50

If it is trapped wind or constipation lying on your back then raising one knee towards your chest (you don't have to get it very far in- not easy when pregnant) with the other leg straight out on the floor, hold for thirty seconds then repeat to the other side, can ease it as it gives your bowel a bit of a massage.

Thank you all so much for your replies, very much appreciated. I'll some of these tips and tricks out especially the stretches x

Child pose is another one to relieve trapped wind- I sometimes immediately fart getting into it (though I try not to in a yoga class 😆).

Wide-legged - knees out with toes touching and a big pillow/stack of cushions in front might be more comfortable when pregnant. Also again it might give your bum a gentle stretch.
