Dd [7] has got tonsillitis and I am having real trouble keeping her temperature down. I am alternating calpol and dalsy , have stripped her, used a damp cloth but can't get her temperature below 38.3.

tbh 38.3 isnt that bad

nailpolish · 25/01/2008 10:26

scrap that! i was thinking of 37.3

SORRY

lucy5 · 25/01/2008 10:29

Thanks, its 38.3 after calpol, it's 39.8 as the calpol wears off. I have been giving her drinks. Didn't think of the fan, will go and give it a try.

make orange juice or ribena ice cubes to suck

oh yes thats a good idea

or even freeze cartons of juice - cut cardboard off top and she can suck like a giant lollipop

or freeze water and juice in a plastic cup with a spoon in the middle like a lolly stick

I'm not a doctor but over here (mainland Europe) the doctors recommend alternating junior paracetemol (usually in suppository form - sorry - it does work brilliantly though) with junior aspirin in liquid form (taken by mouth).

You use them ALTERNATELY to keep temperatures down. That way, instead of only having one medicine x3 a day, for a very stubborn temperature you can use two lots of medicine x3 a day. Does that make sense? That way your child has treatment six times a day without going over any limits.

My dd had a very high temperature of 39.4 the other day and we were very worried. This 'alternating' regime worked brilliantly though although we were told to contact the doctors again if her temperature hadn't significantly reduced after two days. Hope your dd feels better soon.

i thought you werent supposed to giv aspirin to a child? you can give brufen tho and paraceptamol together/alternatively

Madlentileater · 25/01/2008 10:50

deffo no asprin for children- can trigger some rare syndrome, can't remember what. I was told to sponge child down with tepid water, as less of a shock, evaporation will cool the skin. Provided your bathroom isn't too chilly, a tepid bath? Best of luck!

So sorry - that was a mistake - thanks Nailpolish - it is called "Junifen" - don't know if you have that in UK. It is indeed Ibuprofen (sorry - thought that was a form aspirin) and that is what you alternate with paracetemol.

Thanks, i am alternating the Spanish equivalent of calpol and junifen, I have been doing this since yesterday. Her temperature is 39.3 at the moment and she has fallen asleep. So Ive put the fan on. I couldn't find any ice cube trays, so the freezing of cartons is a great idea. Thanks all.
