Would this weight loss worry you?

I'm a 68 year old woman in generally good health. I exercise regularly (long daily dog walks, plus all the usual domestic stuff), eat ok, drink wine a couple of times a week but have cut down a lot lately. I am generally slim build (5'7" size 10).

Since July my weight has been slowly dropping. I've gone from 9st 10lbs then and was 9st 1lb this morning. Ive dropped 0.6kg/another pound since Friday. I've just put it down to eating less chocolate and drinking less wine - mostly for financial reasons, but also because wine just doesn't seem to suit me these days so not enjoying it - but I'm now being told I look "skinny". My friend says I should see a doctor, but don't want to bother them unnecessarily. WWYD? All thoughts welcomed. Thank you.

How much alcohol was you drinking?

prettylittlethingss · 28/09/2022 08:24

If you haven't cut down chocolate and wine dramatically I'd get your thyroid checked. Are you feeling well in yourself?

Tomatoeplantpants · 28/09/2022 08:35

Always get unplanned weight loss checked out. Your G.P will absolutely advise you this.

ProlifiInProfanity · 28/09/2022 09:14

Wine is calorific so if you have drastically cut down that could really reduce weight.
Weight loss really shows in the face as we get older, hence people always start telling people they look gaunt/skinny/ill, but if you are concerned do speak to the GP.

RudsyFarmer · 28/09/2022 09:15

Yes I would want to talk to the GP about that. Sudden weight loss would be a concern. Particularly considering you weren’t overweight to start with.

@YumYummy ... I'm down to half a bottle of wine Friday and Saturday - share a bottle with DH - and nothing during the week, from half a bottle a night. (Too much!)

Half a bottle of wine has at least 300 calories, so if you're not drinking that when you used to, plus say not eating a chocolate bar every day, that's potentially 500 cals a day less you're eating which over 5 days a week is probably enough to be losing weight slowly but fairly steadily (generally 3500 calories less = 1 pound lost).

Probably worth getting checked out regardless, but people do say that when they stop drinking the weight tends to fall off as wine is so calorific.

Lovetogarden2022 · 28/09/2022 10:45

I lose weight dramatically when I'm not drinking (and put it on dramatically when I am 🤣) - it's not just fat, but also the water retention alcohol causes which can make you look a bit bigger than you actually are, especially around your face.
I'd maybe give it a week or so and see if you're losing weight still or if it plateaus a bit. Otherwise see your GP

Get anything unusual for you that persists checked out sooner rather than later. It puts your mind at rest or your GP will prescribe medication/further testing.

JustDanceAddict · 28/09/2022 12:11

No harm in getting it checked. As a student I didn’t drink for 3 months after a particularly grim hangover and I lost no weight. This was when I was drinking regularly as students do.

paintitallover · 28/09/2022 12:15

Really well done on the drinking. I think it's probably saved calories but surely worthy asking GP, even if by email?

YumYummy · 28/09/2022 12:40

So 3.5 bottles of week down to 1 bottle which probably almost a pound a week plus like others have said the bloating.

Wherearemyspex · 28/09/2022 13:00

Thank you for the opinions everyone. Think I'll keep an eye on it for a couple more weeks and see how it goes before I go to the docs, unless I get any obvious adverse symptoms. If it is just cutting out the wine, then I was certainly over doing it, so I'm off it for good now I think.
