Crying after operation

Is this normal? Had a partial knee replacement on Saturday and came home from hospital yesterday

Knee is very swollen, bruised and stiff but all as to expected and in between resting I’ve got up every hour to move around and I’m trying to do as much as physio exercises as I can currently manage pain and movement wise

Since I’ve been home though I just keep crying. Sometimes without realising I’m doing it so I just wake up with tears running down my face etc

Pls can you tell me if this is usual or not?

Thanks

Absolutely normal I'm afraid. Your body knows it's been through a trauma even if you didn't consciously experience it. Also the after effects of the anaesthesia doesn't help. It will pass but don't push yourself

Yes. Some people have this kind of reaction to anaesthetic. It can make you very emotional - not everyone but some people.

I cried unexpectedly during the first couple of days after a general anaesthetic. Not frequently but it did surprise me a bit.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 27/09/2022 17:53

Im like that after general anaesthetic and gas and air, with the added surprise of usually coming out of GA fighting. Im normally very placid and rarely cry at anything, but they both react with me like that. A friend who is an ODP says both are very common.

Oh god yes. I can never understand when people seem normal after operations on the telly ( I know it's not real) I am always a snivelling mess.

HoneyAndMonsters · 27/09/2022 19:56

Are you on post op antibiotics? I had a very strong reaction to an antibiotic called Cipro and one of the “side effects” was crying for no reason. I had a nurse tell me I was just sad about being in hospital! I’m a fully grown woman not prone to crying about being in hospital!

Ihatethedawnchorus · 27/09/2022 19:59

I sobbed for 6 hours non-stop after having a general anaesthetic, very weird as I didn't feel sad or in pain but I was full on sobbing.

HiggidyPiggedy · 27/09/2022 21:12

I had an awful emotional reaction to general anaesthetic. I felt properly depressed and tearful for about 10 days, floods of tears all day for no reason. I was so scared I was relapsing (I’d suffered badly with clinical depression a few years previously) but it lifted and I was fine in the end. Hang on in there and be gentle with yourself!

GA makes me manic! I get all shaky and full of adrenaline and can't stop talking. I'm usually a very calm person, it's weird!

Always4Brenner · 27/09/2022 21:34

Perfectly normal hugs you’ve had a big op and now it’s time to recover but your body has been through a lot.

I cried like a baby coming round from GA, was thanking everyone for saving my life. I had a meniscus trim 😂
