I am normally only posting on health to do with my dc but now its for me

I have had swollen glands/sore throat since yesterday and have a temp of 39.1 and feel pretty s&^t tbh. Would swollen glands give you a temp, or do you think it maybe an infection? hence trip needed to see GP.

Should also add, i feel achy and shivery one min and burning up the next, and my next is sore (where my glands have swollen)

Poor you, its shite isnt it, it sounds like you have the flu coming.

Swollen glands are an indication of infection. Although i bet the doc doesnt give you anything, if its viral you just need to let it run its course as antibiotics will be useless

Plenty to drink, lots of rest (yeah right!), paracetemol to bring down the fever, ibruprofen too at the same time.

Countingthegreyhairs · 25/01/2008 00:15

Hope you feel better soon Pucca and that you manage to get some rest. Dd had something similar on mon with very high temp but it only lasted 2 days. Hope yours is the same.

pucca · 25/01/2008 11:19

Thanks lucyellensmum and countingthegreyhairs.

Have been to see doc this morning and you guessed right, he didn't give me anything, although he didn't even take my temp or feel my glands.

Still feeling really awful, aching and sore neck and throat. It is my dds b'day tomorrow and we have a party booked i really hope i feel better, as if i feel like this i don't think i will be up to going tbh, all i have done is cry, i feel that awful.

OP posts:
Countingthegreyhairs · 25/01/2008 11:44

Oh dear - that's awful Pucca - sorry to hear you are sounding so grim. Hope you do feel for tomorrow ...

Countingthegreyhairs · 25/01/2008 11:45

sorry - meant to say - 'feeling' so grim!!!

Hope you can get some rest today.

pucca · 25/01/2008 21:59

Still feeling awful, temp is still up 39, shivering then burning up, my heart is racing so have taken my pulse and its 114 bpm.

I have phoned NHS direct but they have said it will be up to 4 hrs before a call back. I have been taking paracetamol and ibuprofen and it does seem to bring down my temp a little to 38.6 but i still feel the shivers and the burning up, my clothes are sticking to me atm.

What on earth can i do? i am pretty sure i have an infection of some sort, have a nasty taste every time i swallow and my throat is killing, finding it hard to talk, and drink.

pucca · 25/01/2008 22:13

Should i ring emergency doc do you think?? please help

OP posts:
coby · 25/01/2008 22:36

Sounds to me like you are worried. If your doc had done his job properly this morning then maye you wouldn't be . You can get a good idea if something is viral or not by feeling how the glands have come up (if they are up in chains then apprently it is viral ). He could have at least felt glands and taken temperature. If you are worried then phone the emergency doctor or ring NHS direct back. Did you tell them the ibuprofen and paracetamol are not having a great effect?

DD2 (20 months) had a temp of 40C+ for 3 days a while ago which did not respond to treatment. She was fine. try not to worry too much.

hth

lucyellensmum · 25/01/2008 23:41

pucca, do you have a man who can go to the alnight tesco and get you some throat sweets? Anything with "caine" on the end of it is really effective as they contain local anaesthetic.

If your out of hours service is anything like mine, you might get some advice over the phone, and you might get this quicker than you would waiting for NHS direct, who i have found not very useful in the past.

FWIW, i dont think you are about to pop your clogs or anything. I just think you have a really horrible flu, and im glad is only computor viruses that we can exchange on here. I HATE being ill.

Not sure where coby got the idea about the glands, im dont think ive heard of that, so im a bit skeptical.

Your pulse rate does sound a little high, it might be due to stress - you can try some slow breathing to bring that down, if it helps.

If i were you, i would try and get some sleep rather than waiting on their phone call. If your temperature wont go down, have a warm/hot bath and then sit in a warm room and air dry, that brings your temp down quickly, well at least it works on children.

If you send your man to tesco, or anyone up there, get them to fetch some vitamin C and Zinc tablets too.

I hope you feel better soon.

SparklyGothKat · 25/01/2008 23:42

soundslike the flu, I had it last week, felt terrible.

discoverlife · 25/01/2008 23:44

I am still suffering from the same (travelled down and became a chest infection as well) and I found that a spoon of honey in hot water was really soothing. A good sized spoon, you want to feel the syrup going down and just sip.

lucyellensmum · 25/01/2008 23:46

pucca, you DO have an infection, but please dont worry yourself about it. It is most likely just flu, but its most likely viral and unlikely to respond to antibiotics. Try and hang on in there. There are some really shit bugs around just now. It laid us all up over xmas.

Forgive me, but you seem very anxious about being ill, are you usually so worried by illnesses, it just seems you are a worried about infection. I ask this because i suffer from health anxiety, although it manifests itself differently for me. I wonder if you should mention how worried you get to your doctor.

I'm not saying you are dramatising, dont get me wrong, but you do seem excessively worried and there is no need to be, i promise.

SparklyGothKat · 25/01/2008 23:50

Last week I had the same thing, my throat was sore, my glands were up, my neck hurt, my joints ached, my head was spinning, my nose was blocked, had the shivers and the sweats, was hot and cold all the time, had earache, the whole surbang!! But I did recover, didn't even bother phoning the GP, just rested, lasted about 3 days.

Neverenough · 25/01/2008 23:50

Coby absolute bollocks , sorry but it is.Where did you qualify in medicine?
Pucca, sounds like a viral illness, just drink plenty of fluids and take tregular paracetamol but you are entitled to seek medical help if you are woried, call your surgery and get in touch with the Out of Hours service if you need to do so. Speaking to a Health Professional will either reassure you or confirm that you need to be seen. Don't fret, just be proactive.

coby · 25/01/2008 23:54

errrrr? What bit is absolute bollox - no medical qualifications mentioned or inferred

Neverenough · 25/01/2008 23:57

Coby:

You can get a good idea if something is viral or not by feeling how the glands have come up (if they are up in chains then apprently it is viral ).

I rest my case.

coby · 26/01/2008 00:03

yes - hence the face!!!

It's what I've been told by diff docs twice thats all - I thought it = sceptical face becasue I thought lymph glands came up in chains with any bad infection be it bacterial or viral tbh

The point I was trying to make was that the doc could have at least felt glands and taken temperature to reassure the patient he cared. Just MO.

coby · 26/01/2008 00:06

however...apparently

'Viral infections are often ubiquitous, and usually cause swollen glands on both sides of the neck. If the swelling is right in the middle of the neck, there are other possible causes your health care provider will consider......

.....bacteria often cause a more focal infection, and are much more likely to be the culprit if the swollen glands are only on one side of the neck (unilateral)'.

pucca · 26/01/2008 00:11

Thanks everyone

The reason i am bothered by this, is its my dds 4th b'day tomorrow have a party booked etc, so gutted i feel so shitty! it normally takes alot to knock me off my feet, but this is seriously kicking my arse, just feel dreadful tbh. Can't believe something viral can be so horrible, i know that sounds daft lol, but i tend to think of viral being a cold etc not something so severe as i am feeling.

I am going to keep taking the painkillers, and try and gargle with warm salt water, and hopefully perk myself up a little.

Thanks again, really appreciate all the advice.

OP posts:
pucca · 26/01/2008 00:11

My glands are swollen and sore only on the right side btw

OP posts:
lucyellensmum · 26/01/2008 00:13

ah but that isnt the same as chains

I dont think it really matters. I just think pucca needs some reassurance, and you are right really coby, her doctor should have at least examined her.

I went to doctor with rotten throat once, she said it was most likely viral and tough, get on wiht it, but she did at least examine my throat.

It does make sense about the unilateral swelling, i sometimes get this as i have a bad tooth.

Oh and coby, stop with googling, you'll scare yourself and be bloody starting your own thread at this rate

lucyellensmum · 26/01/2008 00:16

viral is just as shite as bacterial, shitter really as at least bacterial will respond to antibiotics. If you dont feel any better by monday go back to the doctor. OFten viral can lead to bacterial, so you may well end up needing antibiotics, but i bet you feel better by then.

Sorry about the birthday thing, what shitty shitty timing. isnt it always the bloody way.

You will be fine!

Neverenough · 26/01/2008 00:27

Coby, sorry if seemed aggressive.
The thing is, that the story is often the key-GPs are trained to assess someone from the minute they walk through the door. The examination is merely the icing on the cake-history is everything.
Glands up, glands not up, doesn't matter really.
Sorry you feel rotten, pucca and hope you feel better, shouldn't you go to get some sleep now?

luvaduck · 26/01/2008 00:59

Hi pucca
sorry you are feeling shitty

did the doc look in your throat? i hope so! or listen to your chest? if you don't have a cough not so relevant) don't worry too much if he didn't take your temp or feel your glands - he will take your word for it.

it doesn't sound like the flu (with that you get headache, cough, temp and muscle aches rather than severe sore throat)

it sounds like a tonsillitis. this is an infection that could be bacterial or viral (both make you feel rubbish just different types of bugs and only bacterial responds to antibiotics). its difficult to tell initially which one it is. if you're really struggling to drink becasue of the pain, and the funny taste in your mouth then it might be worth calling the out of hours docs tomorrow so they can look in your throat and see if you need antibiotics.

obviously if you get much worse overnight then call for advice.

lucyellen gives good advice - until then rest lots of fluid ibuprofen and paraetomol.

good luck
