After 3 years at school, DS1 has finally succombed to the dreaded nits. He said he had an itchy head at bed time so I had a quick look and found a couple of suspicious looking things. I washed his hair and out lots of conditioner on it and combed with the nit comb.

What should I do next? Does it now need treating with something or is that it?

TIA - still can't believe we've never had them before so Iknow we've been lucky but it does mean that I have no idea what to do!

Gawd, just saw this thread title and instantly started scratching my head

Washersaurus · 24/01/2008 21:25

Is that Nice N Clear (?) stuff you get from the health foody shops any good does anyone know?

chankins · 24/01/2008 21:25

Keep combing every day until you are sure you are rid of them and then keep checking every now and again, they can be a total nightmare to get rid of ! dd2 has had them on and off for a few months now, every time I am sure we are rid, a few weeks later I find one again.dd1 doesn't seem to catch them though, which is odd.

SlightlyMadShrek · 24/01/2008 21:25

Comb every 2-3 days for at least 2 weeks or until they are gone. You don't need to do more than that.

(Comparatively) Easy peasy with boys .

foxythesnowman · 24/01/2008 21:29

I use a cheapish tea-tree conditioner (Alberto Balsam) the really cheap Tesco one caused a reaction - and one of those long-toothed metal nit combs.

Its not so bad for the kids, but I have a nightmare doing mine.

Tommy · 24/01/2008 21:35

Thanks

I comb with the conditioner every time we get a note home from school about them but never found anything before.

A couple of things were moving (so the lice and not nits?) would that make any difference to the treatment? (sorry - forgot to say before)

As for what you can do with them - apparently a teaspoonful of headlice used to be taken as a cure for jaundice.

I once posted that in MN's tips section - oddly enough, it never appeared....

SlightlyMadShrek · 24/01/2008 21:41

NO change.

The best treatment is to remmove the lice with the comb beofre they lay eggs, and repeat with each batch of eggs that hatch over the next 2 weeks. If you are thorough enough the cycle will be complete within 2 weeks.

The nitty gritty comb is the very best as it will remove the eggs so can help shorten the cycle

OK thanks. Will do again at the weekend. Next question - should I mention it to his teacher so they can send out another note?!

Glad it is easier for bys - I only have boys although DS3 is still bald so I don't think they'll bother him just yet.

Think I may pass on your tip as well Rustybear

If there is a known outbreak in teh class no need to tell teacher again. If not then yes do tell so they can send out a letter - otherwise he will only pick them straight back up again from whoever gave him them in hte first place.

Battery nit combs v. useful as can use on dry hair.

seeker · 24/01/2008 22:33

Lice Attack is the best stuff you can buy - and I have a 6 year old nit farmer so I've tried all the non chemical products on the market!

Remember is one member of the family has them, everyone probably does. Also remember that 50% of people with lice don't itch, so just because somebody's not sctraching doesn't mean they haven't got them.

I'm going on Mastermind with head lice as my specialist subject. I swear that if you locked my ds in a sterilized room for a fortnight he's come out with nits.....
