Post viral fatigue?

I had a flu like bug last week and had to have three days off work. I felt much better Thursday night so went to work Friday morning. I lasted two hours. I was off Saturday and then went back in at 4pm Sunday (yesterday). By 9pm (I was meant to finish at 11pm) I was so tired I couldn’t stop shaking, teeth chattering etc.

Im just exhausted in a way I have never felt before.

Im hoping to get a phone consult with my GP later today to get signed off as I can’t take anymore time off sick without a note.

If you’ve had this, how long did it last? I actually start a new job in two weeks which I’m really excited for and off I still feel like this I won’t be able to function.

I seem to be ok to do things for a couple of hours but then my body (and brain) kind of give up. I’ve never known anything like it.

I had covid over six months ago. I'm still not fully recovered. It was the second time I had it and the first time I was fine, I've had flu twice in my life and was fine. This time it has been a real slog. The only thing I can say is you need to rest, I think you might be rushing things. Better to have this week off and a good rest and go back fit rather than rushing back and making yourself ill.

Yes you need more rest and a gentle introduction to activities.

Sorry you’re going through this too.

I was in tears this morning. I’m 42 and I feel like an elderly woman right now. I can’t imagine months of this.

The timing is utterly shit too as current work are going to assume I’m bailing on my notice.

That sounds very covid-like with the hitting a wall of exhaustion and just not being able to go on, although flu can also make you feel like that. My experience with flu was I was ill for a week, recovering for a week, with covid I was sicker for longer and have gone on to have a really protracted recovery lasting months which is still not over. Most people don't have that for covid. Either way, you have to take it easy this week, you won't be the only one calling in feeling really bad, covid rates are rising again.

I’ve taken two negatitive Covid tests, I’ve also had it twice already 🤦🏻‍♀️

Whatever it is is horrible.

Post viral fatigue is totally unrelated to the original virus. Except that if it's after covid it's called long covid.
It can last days or months. And plenty of Drs still don't believe in exists, so I sincerely wish you luck getting signed off.

Yes it is post viral, doesn't matter what the virus is.

I’ve been asleep all day. Dr signed me of until the end of the week and said the only way to get better quicker is to do absolutely nothing. Bed rest, essentially.

I think it’s common to take a coupon weeks at least to feel back to be being fighting fit if you have had a bad virus. However, in my opinion true post viral fatigue is much more rare and more like ME. I was diagnosed with post viral fatigue years ago after a nasty bout of adult chickenpox. It lasted a couple of years before I felt fully well, and was utterly draining, painful and just awful. Hope you are on the mend quicker than I was x

Coupon = couple of😂

Poor you. My husband had this after a really bad flu in 2018. The flu symptoms lasted about 1.5 weeks and the fatigue afterwards for about the same. He was signed off too. He rested and gradually his energy returned. I'm sure you'll come out the other side soon. Rest as much as you possibly can, sleep if you need to, move slowly and build it up. X
