Ovary not found on 2 separate ultrasounds

Hi there

I'm currently 11 weeks pregnant and have been for two separate private scans.

All is well with baby but bother times (two separate sonographers) they couldn't locate my left ovary. The one today said there was a huge shadow and couldn't see it

It's left me a bit worried, is this common or is anyone had anything similar?

Maybe you only have one ovary 😳🤷🏻‍♀️

My great aunt was in her late 60's when she discovered she only has one kidney 😂 I mean when she was born in the 50's ultrasounds weren't a thing, and the baby came out looking fine and healthy, jobs a good un 👍🏻

DBS94 · 22/09/2022 19:35

@CaptainBarbosa I did suggest that today and the lady went "oh well at least one works" 😳 there was no concern from her at all but now I'm over thinking 😂

Well it's not life threatening, and you have conceived so not causing you too much trouble at the moment being possibly one down. If anything that remaining overly is a trooper 😂

lugeforlife · 22/09/2022 20:29

My left one is a right bugger. It goes on holiday all around my pelvic cavity and particularly likes my bowel.

I had a range of gynae issues plus ivf x 3, none of which were ovary related but did mean heaps of scans. They had to visualise it to check it and it was always such a chore. At one point I had my 16 stone rugby front row playing consultant lean on my stomach to make it show up.

Other than annoying everyone, never an issue.

DBS94 · 22/09/2022 20:36

@lugeforlife oh gosh!! That's like mine and it's my left one too. To be fair they didnt really route around for it just scanned over and said it was "hidden by shade", I imagine it's fairly common as it wasn't raised as a concern

My left one is really high up and often isn't found or easy to find if I have a scan, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

DBS94 · 23/09/2022 06:33

Thanks all for your advice and replies. I've got my NHS 'dating scan' a week on Tuesday so I'll mention it to them whilst I'm there but from reading up on it, it seems fairly common. Most things say if there was a cyst or abscess it would be seen on the ultrasound as it would be enlarged

At 11 weeks with two scans already I assume they are just reassurance ones completed at one of those ultrasound clinics? The staff here are usually not fully qualified sonographers.

Not sure why you’ve put the 12 week scan as ‘dating scan’

you also know 20 week scan is the ‘anatomy scan’ right and not a ‘gender scan’?

DBS94 · 23/09/2022 06:49

@Sodiumchloride In my health board district they no longer call it 12 week scan they call it 'dating scan' because they now do it from 10-14 weeks. That's why I put it like that?

Also with my health board, and all others across Scotland they don't do 'gender scans' (which are now called sex scans within our hospitals) on the NHS so I would never think my 16-20 weeks scan was a 'gender scan'?

I've known the 12 week scan called the dating scan due to the fact this is when they give you your estimated due date.
Also it's called the "anomaly scan"

Here in Wales.

The 12 week scan is called "the dating and anomaly scan"

And the 20 week scan is called "anatomy scan"

So I'm not sure OP has said anything wrong 😳

sevenbyseven · 24/09/2022 07:44

My 12-week scans were all called dating scans too (SW England).

sevenbyseven · 24/09/2022 07:48

Oh actually it's standard NHS terminology Grin

Redannie118 · 24/09/2022 20:50

Hi has anyone ever mentioned endometrosis to you before? A hidden left ovary can be a sign of it.

DBS94 · 24/09/2022 21:27

@Redannie118 interestingly enough my doctor did suggest this as it took us quite a while to conceive but I've never had any classic symptoms of endo and periods always been regular and light 🤷🏼‍♀️ ovary could just be hiding there somewhere!

My mum had a unicorn uterus (one ovary) apparently it’s a random birth defect.
she found out when she became pregnant with me, and went on to conceive my sister :)
It meant I arrived very slightly early as I ran out of space but my sister came bang on her due date!

IodineQueen · 25/09/2022 19:41

The shadow can be from the bowel, particularly if you’re a bit constipated.

DBS94 · 26/09/2022 07:11

That would make sense, I've been very blocked up throughout pregnancy!

doninga · 26/09/2022 07:17

Sometimes it is hard to locate one or the other ovary. I have had fertility treatment and they often struggle to find my left (and I don't have any issues - problem is male factor).

In a pregnancy scan if they're not actually looking for it, it's probably not a concern - plus you are pregnant so things are obviously working OK!

bigbadbarry · 26/09/2022 07:20

It’s my left one that is hard to find too! I had a scan abroad once and they asked me twice whether I was sure I hadn’t had surgery to have it removed 🤦‍♀️

I think if you are right handed/ right side dominant, the left is often smaller and less active so harder to locate. It's normal :)
