fractured collar bone

ds 2.10 fractured his collar bone on saturday. fracture clinic told me it would probably heal with a lump on the bone and this is perfectly normal. 2 days ago there was nothing, today there is a huge lump. Anyone know if this is normal? I didnt expect the lump to happen this quickly or overnight. Im a bit worried.

is it painful or hot?

It take a while for new bone formation, you wouldnt expect one this fast, how big would you say it was?

I mean of course it is going to be painful but more than it was

Flier · 24/01/2008 16:04

my ds did this too around the same age. I'm pretty sure this is normal, but if you're worried why don't you phone your gp and ask their advice?

frazzledbutcalm · 24/01/2008 16:24

He's in pain anyway but pain is going down compared to the first few days. I've tried ringing fracture clinic but they don't have a direct line. Rang gp, spoke to receptionist who was nice and said if they said a lump would form, and a lump has formed, then she would imagine that was normal. i felt really stupid when she said that as it sounded so silly but i just didnt expect the lump to appear so early or over night.

Its prob a bit bigger than pea size.

bit bigger than pea size i would think is normal. I worried too, though, cos I was told to expect a wee lump but that if it was big to come back and see them, so, like you, wasn't sure what would be classed as normal!

I just expected the lump to be in a few weeks time not 5 days after the fracture happened! I thought it would grow gradually, not overnight. I also didnt really expect to see the lump tbh. The lump is also in a different place to the bruising.

Did the hospital not explain to you how quickly this type of fracture heals in children? It should be pretty much healed with 10-14 days, from memory.

I've been googling like mad trying to find you some info, am still looking.

frazzledbutcalm · 24/01/2008 17:56

Thanks flier. They just said it would heal quickly. I've googled but all i can find is that a lump may form but it doesn't say when.

I can't find anything at all.
Have you to take him back for a follow up appointment?

frazzledbutcalm · 24/01/2008 18:26

Gotta go back 5th Feb. I guess i'll find more out then but it just worried me when i saw lump today.

ds much better today. He has taken his sling off which i didn't think he'd hv the courage to do. He's using arm slightly but protecting it mostly. I thinkthis is a good thing. Hospital said ds can and will decide when to take sling off. Lump still there so i guess it is just new bone and i shouldn't have worried. Im still shocked it came up so quick.
