Knee operation *athroscopy* recovery how long???

My DP has gone off to hospital to have a knee operation today, I think it's an athroscopy. I don't know much out the problem he has!

What I need to know is how long he'll be out for. We both work and take care of 8 month old DS and I have a couple of days off work to take care of him but would love to go back to work on Monday as I really can't afford to take much more time off. He says it depends on person and maybe he'll be bad for a couple of weeks. I've heard it's not that bad. I really don't want to be waiting hand and foot on 2 children for 2 weeks!!!

Any experiences please!

I was limping for a day or too. Only needed 5 days off work in total though.

LittleMissNorty · 24/01/2008 11:11

I had one done (years ago) and had a week off work.....its not too bad....but I suppose it dos depend on what is being done.

lokka · 24/01/2008 11:14

thanks for quick replies

so he'll probably need a week, my real question is when will he be able to take care of DS again, pick him up etc..

My back is killing me already!

Oh I'd say he could take care of an 8 month old about two days after the op. I only had a little bit of pain by then and was able to walk the dog up and down the road with ease. I only took 5 days off work because they'd given me a sick note for that length of time, as you shouldn't drive a car for a week after a general anaesthetic, apparently.

WigWamBam · 24/01/2008 11:21

Don't rely on it not being that bad - it can be horrible.

I had an arthoroscopy and release done on both knees at the same time, and was off work for two weeks - went back whilst I was still on crutches, couldn't drive for six weeks. Was still in lots of pain and couldn't walk far for months though, and would have struggled with children because I was on the crutches for so long.

A lot of it depends on what they find, and what they do when they're in there. I had work done on my tendons at the same time, which may have made a difference, as did having both knees done together.

Tissy... that was what my old fart of a GP told me (I think he trained around 1930)

lokka · 24/01/2008 16:34

well..he's had the operation and they said it seemed to go well and there have been no problems. I hope that it's going to stay like that and in a day or two he'll be lifting DS again and giving my back a break!

Anyone else had this op and a quick recovery?

I've had this under local anaesthetic.

It's not bad at all, recovery wise!

FAR better than the pain he was in before the op.

Only needed 5 days off work, too.

Sore for high-end sports for about a month.

lokka · 24/01/2008 16:42

Thanks! good to know! and how long were you on crutches?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 24/01/2008 16:45

I wasn't told to keep weight off it at all.

I walked with those stick type crutches in order to help me walk with a normal gait, although slowly, for about a week.

I had two surgeries by athroscopy. On one knee, to release my knee cap. On the other, to remove torn cartilage.

singingmum · 24/01/2008 16:49

Had one of these when teen and was back at school day or two after able to use one crutch only when needed to carry or do something. Is pain if in both knees as then he will need more help, but in reality it's only three little scars and a camera viewing inside the knee so not so nasty at all.My grandfather had one last year in both knees and was up and about within 2 weeks and he's 80

singingmum · 24/01/2008 16:50

Sorry forgot that sometimes they do op like this but still not so awful

lokka · 24/01/2008 18:07

thanks for experiences, i just hope he is able to pick DS up too. we have no family near to help to it's all down to little me!
