A close family member is starting inpatient chemo for AML. Can anyone advise about potential side effects and how he might feel during the intensive stage of treatment. We know it'll be hard going but just want to be prepared as I will be with him for some of it.

Any tips on what he might need to help get him through it? He is 50 and in otherwise good health.
Thanks so much

Hi op, my mum did get very weak & slept a lot. She was only allowed certain foods & her hair fell out after possibly a couple of weeks. The treatment is very strong & she needed a lot of blood & plasma transfusions. Just make sure he has enough easy things to do as he will quite likely have to stay in hospital for a long time. Good luck

My mum had treatment for AML and liked lemonade, lucozade, tea.
she completely lost her appetite so sweet drinks were good. She slept for most of the day and night. They did manage to get rid of the cancer but the treatment was gruelling. She found ice lollies helpful due to very sore lips, the phone by her bed was a lifeline. When she became breathless she found square breathing helpful. Incomtinemce pants and someone to cut her toenails. The hospital was extremely hot so a Dyson fan was great. 50 is so young, I’m sorry your family are going through this
