Advice on Dad

Hi all hoping to get a bit of advice on this or a hand hold Flowers

For the past couple of months my Dad has been suffering with extreme tiredness with some dizziness also. Only the past week he has been having a very bad pain in his stomach with a swollen tummy.

He was diagnosed with lung cancer 5 years ago but he had stage 1 and it was operable- he had it cut away.

He went to the gp yesterday for an emergency appointment, they took a blood test and also felt his swollen stomach. Apparently gp said he couldn't feel anything in his stomach that was concerning from the outside? But was surprised he had no chemo as that would have gotten the cancer cells away 100% Chemo was never offered to him...
Also we were told my Dad was never really 'discharged' from the hospital- so that's upset me in itself that he's been lost in the system with the NHS. That would explain why we never heard back in years for a check up Sad

We find out the results of his blood test next week- I thought usually you'd be able to hear the results of a blood test over the phone but the fact they are calling him in is concerning?

I'm generally feeling quite low and I'm worried any bad news is going to tip me over the edge. I have a 10 week old baby and suffering with post natal anxiety anyway. I would appreciate anyone's advice or even opinions x

It's good that your Dad was able to get the emergency appointment. Also reassuring that the GP found nothing concerning on the physical exam of your Dad's stomach. Blood tests have been done, which can hopefully shed some light on why your Dad has been feeling so tired and dizzy.

Regarding getting lost in the system, I also experienced this when my Dad was extremely poorly during the pandemic. He was admitted to hospital several times over several months and was also not "discharged" from the hospital as we were informed from the GP's secretary. In fact the admin was pretty chaotic!

Fingers crossed that everything is OK with Dad and that he feels better soon.
Hope you are doing ok, try not to worry although I know that is easier said than done!

The GP should have on record your Dad’s hospital notes, which should say whether he needed further ongoing treatment after operating. Was he given a printout when he left hospital. I think whatever the outcome of the blood test, GP will refer him to be checked out, so presume they just need to do bloods in first instance to be able to do this.

Chemo is often not given with stage 1 cancers, especially if they are low grade, as there is no benefit, so that part isn't unusual. It could be lots of things with your DF, and even cancer can be managed successfully for some time. The thing that jumps out at me is your need to focus on yourself and your baby, is there other family support for your DF as well as for you?

Lots of us who have / have had cancer feel that this bit, the uncertainty, is the worst period and once you're a bit clearer with what the situation is and what's going to happen you can settle in to getting on with it. I know it's easy to say and hard to do, but try not to jump ahead and catastrophise, and try to live in the moment.

Fingers crossed it's something easily resolvable Flowers

Thank you so much @anewbook for your reassuring comment. So sorry to hear your Dad went through something similar.

Well he has purked up a bit over past few days although still saying he has the tiredness. We get the results Wednesday so we will see what comes of it. Thank you again Flowers

Hello @JulyDreams
Any news on Dad? How is he doing?

JulyDreams · 22/09/2022 11:26

@anewbook thank you for asking Flowers I should have updated!

He went to his GP appointment yesterday to get his blood test results. He has been told nothing was seen in the blood tests taken. I presume this would mean any cancers... they did however find inflammation... but wasn't sure where.

Apparently GP said he wasn't worried but wants to find out what the inflammation is so he is having an ultrasound on his stomach in a couple of weeks time. I am thankful it's good news to some extent but I don't think it's the end of the road as such for him yet.

The swelling on his stomach has gone down. Unsure what the extreme tiredness is he has been getting. He had covid back in June so maybe it was due to that still.

Good to hear your update and that the appointment went well with the GP. Also good that the swelling has gone down too. An ultrasound sounds a practical next step as they can check to see things like the gallbladder function etc.
Tiredness might be due to post-covid as you say.
It sounds like he is getting the attention he needs at any rate and is lucky to have such a caring daughter!
Take care!
