Hyperthyroidism experiences?

TisButterSnacks · 14/09/2022 22:07

I'm getting a blood test tomorrow so I should know soon either way, but I think I have symptoms of hyperthyroidism and was curious about other people's experiences.

I have a lump on my neck where one might expect a goiter to be, I am losing weight all of a sudden without any major efforts on my part, my anxiety recently shot through the roof for no specific reason, I'm sweating more lately, and my sleep is god-awful.

Apart from the lump, these symptoms could be perimenopause instead. Well, apart from mysterious weight loss as well. I do feel more tired in general, and strangely weaker - I recently took up exercise and I was expecting more improvements in stamina than I've seen. But maybe that's me getting older? Tho only in early 40s!

If you've been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, is any of this familiar? Thanks.

I was losing a lot of hair; washing, brushing, all the time. And it grew quickly too.

TisButterSnacks · 15/09/2022 07:15

Interesting, I don't have any hair loss. Do you need to exhibit all symptoms?

KangarooKenny · 15/09/2022 07:16

My only symptom was not being able to get pregnant.

TisButterSnacks · 15/09/2022 11:33

Sorry to hear that- did treatment help?

I've just remembered another symptoms that could be peri (or not), my periods have become erratic in timings as well as behaviour, mostly getting lighter and lighter over the past couple of years.

I read last night that hyperthyroidism can be caused by prolonged and high periods of stress, which describes my life perfectly over the past 4 years or so.

Hi, I have same thing mine has grown and it’s noticeable. Doctor has booked in for bloods and because I have HA she’s referring ENT. Im the opposite with weight, I eat healthy and go to the gym but have put on weight. I’ve got loads of symptoms like hair falling out, feeling cold and hot, mood swings and loads more. 😞

i was okay until the doctor said don’t worry I’ve got no concerns that you have cancer but your lymph nodes are a bit prominent. I’m currently planning my funeral thinking I’m riddled with cancer! Joys of suffering HA!

please keep us updated and hope all is okay.

TisButterSnacks · 17/09/2022 20:28

Oh Jog that would make me immediately worry as well! Fingers crossed for you.

I've basically convinced myself I have hyperthyroidism, I just discovered further symptoms are quickly greying hair as well as greasy hair - tick and tick. Glamorous eh?

I am genuinely baffled over the weight loss though, I'm really not doing/eating any differently now compared to earlier this year, but my clothes are noticeably looser all of a sudden. I don't weigh myself though so don't know the extent of it.

I should hear back about the blood tests next week, they said. We shall see.

My symptoms were more in line with hypothyroidism, but I definitely have hyperthyroidism. Unexplained weight loss is an absolutely classic symptom though, some people end up losing a drastic amount before diagnosis. The British Thyroid Foundation has loads of good information.

userxx · 17/09/2022 22:28

The heatwave sent me to the GP demanding HRT as I could no longer take the insane sweating, the GP suggested it could be thyroid and sure enough it is. My blood pressure and heart rate are also high which is caused by the issue.

I've been referred to the hospital but it could be 3 months before I'm seen, I'm hoping to be a size 6 by then. Joking.

The symptoms are so similar to menopause, aching joints, weakness, periods awol, lack on concentration, racing heart, anxiety the list goes on 🙈

This is what keeps blowing my mind and makes me desperate to find out what's actually going on. Lately I've started sweating while drinking a hot drink, or just walking a bit quickly to catch the train, etc. I've also been thinking my deodorant has lost strength/gone out of date and need to change brands or something, but that's another symptom I've discovered. Gah.

Hi TisButterSnacks,

Hope you’re okay- do you have your results back yet?. Mine is on Thursday can’t wait to get them done I just hope that it does show something because I’m sick of these symptoms. I’ve written them them to compare but I think I’m under active and you maybe over?. These symptoms are every day now… im not concerned too much apart from the lump that’s shown up that’s what is worrying me most.

Dizzy
Anxiety
Depression/ feeling very low mood
Freezing cold hands/feet
Pins needles hands feel like they are on fire
Always hungry but do eat healthy
exercise no weight loss
Heavy irregular periods
Very Pale skin/ puffy face
Restricted breathing especially laying down
Loads of hair falling out (had to call plumber)
Brain fog
Mood swings
Nervous/feeling worried
Sleep problems (waking up all hrs)
Hearloss- getting worse
goiter/round lump on thyroid
heels constantly broken skin
brittle nails
gums (had to have 3 back teeth pulled out)

there is probably more but this is what I written down to remember all the symptoms for doctor. Hope you keep us updated.

TisButterSnacks · 19/09/2022 16:24

Hi, @Jog569 those symptoms sound worrying and frustrating for sure.

I have been remembering more and more niggling issues that could be symptoms, but it could also be perimenopause. I had a terrible bout of anxiety in the early summer, which I'm now taking beta blockers to keep under control, and I've discovered this is a treatment option for hyperthyroidism induced anxiety as well. But peri can kick off anxiety, so who knows!

I might hear back tomorrow on results, but potentially later in the week as well. I'll update the thread.

Jog569 · 19/09/2022 17:29

You would think but the doctors shrug it off, I’m going to call my doctor tomorrow and see if they can give me anything to calm my nerves. My anxiety makes me have a lump in my throat so I’m struggling to breath.

good luck with your results x

TisButterSnacks · 20/09/2022 19:11

I received a text from the GP today asking me to make an appointment to discuss my blood test results with a nurse, but I'll have to ring at 8am tomorrow about 80 times in a row in order to get an appointment.

I'm assuming this means something has come back as abnormal. Simply cruel to run the appointment system this way.

OP posts:
Jog569 · 20/09/2022 19:41

Hey, i know it’s easier said than done but try not think the worse- it most likely to say about thyroid maybe being over or under?.

I hope everything is okay I know how worrying it is, I called 111 last night and went to a&e because I completely freaked out. My bloods came back this morning and it said my thyroid was normal?. So then I had another massive panic attack. Lucky the doctor told me to come in straight away to calm my nerves. He then referred in fast track to get my scan done with in two weeks. He did say they might decline and I’d have to wait longer 😭

I know it’s worrying- the most I’m worried about is the lump 😕

Jog569 · 20/09/2022 19:43

Also in my early 40s

TisButterSnacks · 20/09/2022 19:57

Oh, Jog I'm sorry you went through that. Fingers crossed you get some answers with the scan, but normal levels are a good thing I'm sure. Take heart.

Will be interested to hear what the results are. I never once considered my thyroid was confused, I just thought menopause.

Jog569 · 20/09/2022 20:54

I think it’s just the not knowing and waiting is torture for us. I hope you get good results.

do you have a scan booked in? How big is your lump?. Mine is all over the front of neck where the thyroid is it’s not rock hard but feels round and big. My doctor said it’s actually very rare for a goiter or lump there to be cancerous let’s hope ours aren’t.

TisButterSnacks · 21/09/2022 20:12

The receptionist fucked up my appointment and booked me in for a f2f appointment rather than a phonecall so I never spoke to anyone today.

I get to ring back tomorrow morning and try again. 😵

I'm rather fed up tonight.

I don’t know why they think it’s acceptable to do this to patients. They should of still contacted you. No wonder you’re livid.

I am quite lucky with mine (apart from my usual doctor going on holiday & not putting my referral through). I called my doctors about my anxiety and my doctor called back and said come see me in 30 mins. He was so kind, listened to my worries and checked my lump. He was referred me (I have my date already 4th October). I want this year over with…..

hope you’re okay, I have been prescribed propranolol and must say it’s really worked for me, I’ve not been panicking about it so much.

sorry for long post. Let me know how you get on.

TisButterSnacks · 22/09/2022 06:56

I took two beta blockers last night which is usually enough to calm me down before bed, but I had a bad night's sleep and woke up in the middle of a panic attack. I have some other things I'm worried about besides this, so it all felt too much in the night. Also not helped by my youngest deciding to wake super early!!

@TisButterSnacks have you had one set of blood tests so far?

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism back in April and when I spoke to the doctor I had to be referred for another set of blood tests to confirm before my referral to an endocrinologist.

My only real symptom was constant hunger and people telling me I'd lost weight. I have a toddler and was working part-time at the time so thought I was busy. Turns out I'd dropped 2 stone and was down to 7 stone 3 !

Jog569 · 22/09/2022 08:48

Please call doctors and say that you’re having panic attacks they will help you. Even just talking to you will help. I know how you feel as I’m going through the same thing. Have you been referred?

TisButterSnacks · 22/09/2022 10:29

Spoke to the gp at last! Bloods are normal so far, no thyroid issues. Waiting for hormone results in a few days.

Potentially this is all merely stress. Hey ho.

Wishing you well, Jog!

Glad you got to speak to the doctor it does ease your worries a little doesn’t it. Have they looked at your lump? Hope you feel better now.
