Only been running for a couple of weeks and I've already hurt myself.

I started running as an absolute beginner a couple of weeks back. I got new trainers, not the most expensive but the best I could afford. After the first couple of runs I noticed a funny pain just under my ankle bone on the inside of my foot but it wasn't that bad and went away the next day.

Last night it hurt as soon as I started, I managed a mile but ok but was a bit achey at the end. Today my ankle is swollen and I'm hobbling. I just feel so so gutted. I don't want to stop running as I've only just started but I've obviously hurt myself.

Any ideas? do you think I need different trainers? Any help appreciated.

Possibly Jenkey. Did you go to a 'proper' running shop or did you buy from a spotty teen in JJB? How far are you running and on what sort of surface?

Have a look here for some info on pronation. Good running shoes don't have to be expensive but if they do need to be offering support where you need it.

This happened to me in September. Doctor had x ray done but found nothing, ended up going to osteopath who said that my arches had dropped, he did some stuff that helped loads but I haven't dared run again.

Hi there
I did loads of running, pre pregnancy. I found after pregnancy that my joints hurt much more and have found road running to be a bit of a nightmare. Since then I have been running on the treadmill and have found it much kinder on the joints, with fewer aches and pains. After Speaking to a few of my friends it seems to be a common complaint. A lot of them use the treadmill in winter and head for softer ground in the summer. Also remember with any sports injury RICE 'rest, ice, compression and elevation'
A great book to guide you through even the basics of running is 'The competitive runner's handbook by Bob Glover'

Thanks everyone - I haven't even been running that much. Doing around a mile in distance and building up from running and walking to alternate lampost to probably 75% running. I think maybe my body is just complaining that it is finally moving after all these years. I think I'm going to go to a running shop for a proper gait analysis. I did get my running shoes from JJB they were in the sale reduced from £55 to £25, still pretty cheap in the world of running shoes I think so maybe that's the problem. I think the other problem is that I am a full time birkonstock wearer so used to the support that the footbed gives me - oh if only birkenstock made running shoes!

JJB aren't great for running shoes I'm afraid, you might be better trying a small local running/sports shop.
