Vq test in pregnancy - any radiologist/docs give opinion ?

So I am 32 weeks pregnant and currently low on iron at 96 . Unable to tolerate tabs so was on triage on Mat unit this week to organise iron transfusion . Whilst there I was examined by doc and mentioned as well as been lethargic and run down I had pain upon breathing in and short of breath . Doctor instantly worried about pulmonary embolism . I explained I had chest pain on and off all pregnancy but he was still very concerned .
i had ecg which was normal , normal echo and am now being persuaded to have a vq scan after I adamantly refused a cpa scan with the breast cancer risk .
im so concerned , my gut feeling is it could be due to reflux or my anemia or just from getting bigger but doctors won’t accept this and are pushing for this scan .can anyone make me feel better about the childhood cancer risk to my unborn baby and also the risk to myself of breast cancer? . I’m so conflicted . A doctor said today it’s highly unlikely it will be a clot due to my positive test results but they still want me to have it and I’m terrified … can anyone reassure me or confirm the risk and implications from the radiation ? Please be honest and give your true opinion ?

Firstly Thankyou everyone for the reassurance and advice . I had the scan - half dose and was completely negative so blood clot in lung ruled out . I’m still having chest and upper back pain it seems worse when I breathe and I find if I’ve been active and sit down my back and chest throbs for a short while . Very strange . Any idea what this could be or is it likely to be another pregnancy symptom due to the added weight and pressure on me ? I’ve had clear lung scan , clear echo and clear ecg . Bp fine and only issue on bloods is the anemia which I’m getting transfusions for .

Hi,

I realize this is a very old post. But I have just been in the exact same position as you. I had the scan but ended up having a break down just before to the radiologists with fear. I had no PE in the end, which deep down I knew. Now I’m kicking myself for exposing myself to that radiation for what I feel like was for no reason.

I just wanted to know if you had the scan? If so were you ok? And was baby ok?

Thanks

xx

Hello. I am having a breakdown over a VQ scan I had a couple of days ago at 27+5. It’s come back negative and I really didn’t think I had a blood clot but was kind of pressured into (I understand why as risks from PE can be fatal etc). But I honestly haven’t slept since and just keep crying. I am so so worried for my little baby girl. I feel like how can anyone really know the effect that the tests can have - is there anyone here who had it who can provide any reassurance? Or a way to try and stop obsessing over it. I keep looking at my pattern and little boy and just feeling desperately sad incase I’ve done something that is going to have negative effects. Xxxxxx

I had a VQ in my pregnancy 6 years ago - I did have a PE so was life saving for me and my 6 year old in currently running around the garden and I had a further one in a future pregnancy - he is now a toddler and perfectly well. We can’t predict the future in anything and as with loads of the comments earlier in the section - it’s low dose and considered to be very low risk. Try and enjoy your pregnancy!
