Alcohol induced asthma? Is it a thing?

As the title suggests, I've noticed whenever I have a couple of drinks, sitting on the sofa and finding myself struggling to take in deep breaths. It's gotten so bad, my DP has noticed I seem to be struggling to breathe

Obviously I am going to cut down, possibly not have any at all. Couple nights a week give or take, I'll have a couple double gins. But this has also happened when I had a med change

I was originally on Concerta xl, then got switched to Xaggitin xl (adhd medication) and had the same problem, then calmed down. But it's come back so not really sure what's going on?

I've had an ecg, all fine. Blood pressure spot on, thyroid, kidneys, liver, also fine as I get this checked regularly

My partner has this, alongside a red face and sneezing the day after! He’s allergic!

@CoconutSky Funny you mention sneezing. I sometimes get that too. Interesting! Never thought of that

Which alcoholic drink? Some people can be allergic to certain wine chemicals, usually found in red wine.

CoconutSky · 09/09/2022 01:40

@bippityboppity87 it took us a while to make the link. I’ve just asked him about breathing and he said he had the exact same. Can’t take a deep breath, felt very wheezy and snuffly too.
i wonder if you’re allergic as well

RestingMurderousFace · 09/09/2022 01:42

Think I have this with red wine, only started in my mid 40s.

bippityboppity87 · 09/09/2022 01:43

@Pixiedust1234 It's gin. I don't drink anything else, maybe the occasional lager. But I've drunk gin for years and never had this reaction, which is why I find it odd that it's happening all of a sudden

How curious. Is it the same gin? Wonder if there's an ingredient you are reacting to.

Some people only start hayfever symptoms as they get older (or grow out of it), so maybe you are reacting to a plant ingredient/flavouring. Would be worth testing with different brands/ flavours if you really enjoy drinking (and possibly fun).

bippityboppity87 · 09/09/2022 02:07

@Pixiedust1234 the same gin and never had this reaction before. Only thing I can think of is maybe my adhd medication, but even then I never had that reaction until recently. Been on my adhd med since late 2020. It is odd

My asthma is also very responsive to drugs and things like that. I get very tight chested. I was awful for days after a recent surgery (but my chest sounded fine) and for about a week after my chemotherapy my chest is super tight and the asthma pump only relieves it for about an hour. I put it down to my body being hyper sensitive to chemicals. I haven’t found a cure sadly!

I also sneeze uncontrollably after drinking alcohol, used to be a standing joke amongst my friends when we used to go out drinking. I don't get any other symptoms though bad it hasn't stopped me drinking 😛
