Terrified of getting dry socket

I had a tooth extracted last Friday. It's healing well, it clotted over and had the white granulation tissue covering it. However today it seems to have come away from the socket - is this normal 5 days post extraction? I'm literally so worried that I'm going to get dry socket 😭

What did you dentist advise? Are you doing salt water rinses?

I saw him yesterday, he said it's healing well. It's only today that the tissue has come away. I am doing salt water a few times a day.

I had dry socket 14 years ago after an extraction - still the worse pain I have ever experienced in my life. Praying you don't get it.

Anxious bump

The pain is awful, I'll admit that.
However if you do get dry socket then get onto your dentist asap. It's a simple and quick procedure to "fill" it and brings immediate relief.

I've had dry socket every time I've had a tooth extraction.

Should you be rinsing? Did the dentist advise this? Just you don’t want to dislodge the clot. DS pain is horrific I still remember mine nearly 20 years on. I went to a&e couldn’t cope with the pain.

Darkness22 · 08/09/2022 07:14

But after 5 days you would be half way to it growing over anyway. I've had it 3 times. Get dome clove oil just in case. Or you could make another appointment and get it packed if necessary.

Can you get emergency appointment with dentist to check? I’m waiting to get a wisdom tooth extracted and terrified over getting dry socket.

The clot has gone, thats what I'm worrying about 😞 I was recommended to gently rinse with salt water a few times a day to keep it clean.

I have dry socket right now (for the third time Confused). If you're worried, go straight to your dentist and ask them to dress it - I forget the name, but it's like a clove-y tasting brown paste. Gross, but takes the edge off very quickly. Then get yourself to the pharmacy for some top-end Cocodamol! Warm salt rinses, lots of naps - mine has always improved quite rapidly. Good luck, and fingers crossed you won't need the above.

DiscoStusMoonboots · 08/09/2022 07:37

Ahhh with the rinsing, the trick is not to swill. Just let the water 'rest' around the impacted area, then let it dribble out into the sink.

Pinkpeony2 · 08/09/2022 07:40

I had it once and to be honest the pain before I had the tooth extracted was such agony that nothing was as bad for week afterwards.
I just too some strong pain killers and went back to the dentist who packed it in 30 secs. All done
Just ring quickly and go in.

Darkness22 · 08/09/2022 07:50

I think you would know? Maybe you just lost a bit of it. Underneath takes about 10 days to heal over, so you should get away with it. If not just ask for packing. You'll be fine.

SinkingSwim · 08/09/2022 08:19

So the white tissue came away yesterday, leaving an empty socket essentially. That's 5 days post extraction, I don't have any real pain so maybe I'm in the clear? 🤞🏻

I can't think of anything I could have done to dislodge it otherwise, I'm eating soft foods still, only holding the salt water over the site and not brushing anywhere near it.
