Hi
Wondering if anyone has experience? I was getting pain when I moved eyes about a week ago and then blurred vision in one eye. The pain seems to be almost completely gone now but still got the blurred vision. I went to hospital last weekend who annoyingly didnt look it under lamp but had opticians appointment yesteday who said one optic nerve was swollen que an urgent referral up to eye hospital last night. They confirmed the same one swollen one slightly but nothing really compared to the other. I have yo get bloods done today says on papers for atypical optic neuritis and need to go for brain scan to rule out anything from brain causing the pressure I will seen within a week
I am freaking out
He said sometimes in woman my age it can happen resolve itself for no reason but they need to check the brain. I also have aps which google says it can happen
Does anyone have any experience?

Good luck, OP. It is scary. It happened to me and it turned out to be nothing very serious.

I had this too although no pain what so ever. I had a flashing in the peripheral visionI I could not see anything but a fog out of one eye. My opticians referred me to the eye clinic the same day. They diagnosed something minor which I knew was not right. I saw a private ophthalmologist a few days later who diagnosed optic neuritis. I couldn’t drive or do my job as my vision was so poor. I had a brain MRI following that appointment which was clear and bloods for various viral and autoimmune disorders which was also clear. The main thing to rule out is MS. My doctor said for once being older was on my side as it tends to occur for the first time more so in young adults. I was told if I was younger he would have referred me to a neurologist but felt that with the clear results it was not necessary. It slowly resolved over a period of 5-6 weeks and has not reoccurred. I never did find out what caused it and have had no further issues.

Thanks ladies I have an mri on saturday so at least will have all results on tuesday at follow up I just worry about brain tumors as he said they scan to make sure nothing in brain is causing pressure in the nerve. Weirdly the eye pain is totally gone today and my vision doesnt seem to be as blurrly hopefully this is a good sign

I got typical optic Neuritis at 34. Had all the scans etc to rule out anything nasty. It righted itself in a couple of weeks and I've never had a problem since. Fingers crossed for you that, like me, its just one of those weird things that happen.

My son had this. Subdural haematoma

Graceymac99 · 08/09/2022 06:38

I was 45 at the time.

Chaotica · 08/09/2022 14:25

I was 39 when it happened to me.

Good luck on Saturday.

Did you ever find out the cause for this? I'm going through similar now and I'm nervous of the causes.

I had this just before Christmas, picked up at the opticians, no symptoms. Mine was bilateral (in both eyes). They wanted to send me straight to hospital but then checked their records and found it was pretty much the same as my last eye appointment 18 months earlier (when it wasn’t even mentioned), so they sent me to an eye dr a couple of weeks later. He couldn’t tell me what it was but said if it had been anything sinister I’d probably know after 18 months, apparently sometimes just one of those things. Told me to look out for ‘anything neurological’ then let me go!

Comparing the opticians results to their previous results is critical. Hope this helps future readers.
