Discharge after outpatient gallbladder surgery

Hello

my husband is having his gallbladder removed and has been told patients usually go home on the same day. It’ll be keyhole surgery and he’ll be under general anestesia.

I may have some training that day until 2:30 and he wants me to reschedule it because he thinks he might be discharged by then.

I think he’s being way too optimistic.

I’m happy to change the training but I’m curious to know how long after surgery he’s likely to be discharged.

He’s been asked to arrives at the hospital at 7:30

thanks!

I was discharged 6 hours after mine. It depends what number he is on the list for surgery - they get everyone in early but he may wait til the afternoon for his theatre slot.

Thanks, yes, they were clear that he should be there at 7:30 but it doesn’t mean he’ll be seen to straight away.

I'm sure someone that works in recovery/day surgery can advise, but I thought that you can't be discharged within 4hrs of a general? Usually 1hr in recovery then several hours back on the ward to check his blood pressure/temperature/heart rate etc is normal, bleeding/pain isn't excessive and that he has passed urine. Did the say how long the surgery normally takes?

He could be bumped till later in the day if higher risk patients need to go 1st. Do you have a plan B pick up person IF by chance, he can leave earlier? Worse case, they'd move him to the discharge lounge where he'd sit till you could collect him. Even if he went into theatre at 8:30 for the actual surgery, 2hrs in theatre (only guessing?) then 4hrs post op= 14:30.

If he’s first on the list, he could be out of theatre by 9.45 and we wood usually discharge around 4 hours post op….however it really wouldn’t be an issue if someone said they couldn’t be collected until 2.30 so I’d go ahead with the training.

I was in at 7.30, operation 3pm, home at 8 ( some complications post anaesthetic)

Thanks to everyone.

I think I’ll reschedule for his peace of mind, but it seems unlikely he’ll be home for lunch…

it’s for a volunteer position, so they’re very flexible with the training dates.
