Does anyone know how long ultrasound results take if something such as cancer is wrong?

I had a lump on my collarbone and was worried about cancer. I went for an ultrasound an and the consultant who did it talked to me throughout. I think he could see how worried I was. He told me he didn’t see anything sinister, took loads of photos and said he would recommend a chest X-ray to make sure. I watched on the screen as he did it.
I then got a follow up phone call a week later saying I’d be getting an appointment. Cannot fault the hospital.

When my dad asked her for how it's looking she said she's not allowed to say. Does that mean it's bad news?

Both DH and I had scans - mine was ultrasound - and they did a biopsy immediately there and then for both of us. It wasn’t a case of go away and come back in a week.

bloodywhitecat · 06/09/2022 21:13

DH was never told scan results on the day but whenever it was bad news he was always contacted quickly (within days and sometimes hours, rather than weeks).

LovelyQuiche · 06/09/2022 21:16

If there’s something wrong like cancer then you’ll be contacted either by the gp or by the consultant (or their team) who the gp would have referred to. Sometimes the next step will be a Ct scan

I had a lump on my arm pit and was freaking out, the ultrasound technician told me (while applying the scan) it was just a lump of fat do not worry. I went for another ultrasound months later (unrelated issue, different part of my body) and the scan technician told me “he was not allowed to give my any diagnostic”. Turns out I had a massive fibroid in my uterus.

Did they suspect you had the c word? z what prompted the biopsy?

My GP called me a few days later. It was benign fibroid.

How are you now? I just thought that they say that as they're not actual consultants and may give incorrect info so as a general rule of thumb they say that to cover themselves incase they mislead.

The biopsy was because of what they saw on the scans. They didn’t hang around. We both had the c word. What they are able to biopsy immediately there and then will vary, though, I expect.

user0786 · 06/09/2022 21:28

@Snowiscold I'm sorry to hear that. What type of the c word was it if you don't mind me asking? do you think if they couldn't do a biopsy they would still say on the day that an abnormality has been found and they'll need to do further tests which he'll need to go back for?

I’m good thanks, just dealing with very painful periods because of the fibroid. It’s a massive benign cyst.I will need a histerectomy at some point. I guess when they see something very simple and benign scan techs will give you an answer (such as: “your lump is just a fat lump, not cancer”), but if they see something else they will leave it to your GP to explain as they’re not medically trained.

goldenbag · 07/09/2022 20:11

It depends who you get, so I really would try not to read too much into it. I had a scan and the woman was really cold and wouldn't tell me anything. It was really obvious she'd seen something because she was asking all sorts of questions about where I felt pain etc. spent Christmas convinced I had cancer. GP finally called in new year and it was a benign cyst, just needed a rescan.

Autumnisnearlyhere · 02/08/2023 12:36

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. But I’ve had an ultrasound today (and thinking possible pcos or endometriosis) I had both external and internal exams but the external exam consisted of having the scan just under my rib cage and on my sides, but not the belly area??? I wondered if this was normal? It really hurt a lot as well and I’m not one to sweat the small stuff usually.

Sandra1984 · 02/08/2023 20:58

I found a lump the size of half a cherry in my armpit two years ago, I was freaking out as I thought it was breast cancer. Was sent to scan/ultrasound by my GP asap. The technician (male) did his job quick then told me right away: “don’t worry it’s a fat lump”. I believe simple benign stuff like that they’re able to tell. A few months ago when they found my large fibroid they said nothing and I had to wait for my GP to call and explain over the phone.the technicians are not doctors and properly trained to diagnose more complex stuff.

Boredofmyguts · 02/08/2023 22:27

i recently had an abdo scan on nhs and they said ‘i can’t see anything untoward’ - usually it’s all hush-hush. Had a interval
pelvic one last year and I didn’t even ask - I knew there was ‘something’ as she asked if my bowels were ok (they were then), I had fibroid and polyp!! I think it depends on who you get as well

Autumnisnearlyhere · 08/08/2023 06:53

Thanks for the replies, although now I’m worried it’s something serious as the sonographer didn’t say anything at all, but I felt she scanned the wrong area?? The issues are coming from around and below my belly button but she didn’t scan there she scanned just under my ribs and internally, I guess I’ll just have to wait for the bad news :-(

I’ve since read reviews of the place I went to and almost everybody gives it 1 star out of 5 as the sonographer was cold and rude, which probably doesn’t help either !

Dancerr · 08/08/2023 07:42

When I had a breast ultrasound, he told me what he thought it was there and then. He pointed out cysts but there was one area he said he will be honest he doesn't know exactly, small white area. He did a biopsy and it ended up being benign, was sclerosis of some type.

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 08/08/2023 08:20

I had a chest X-ray for one thing and they saw a shadow on it that wasn’t seen on one 4 months earlier; was in hospital 8 days later for a CT scan and seen by a respiratory consultant 6 days after that (in both cases there was a long bank holiday weekend in between the appointments as well so they responded quickly. After being told by the respiratory chap that I’d be monitored in around 6 months time, I got another call later that day to say I was being referred for further tests within 2 weeks.

Another week later, the plan changed from scan to surgery asap and it was done 7 weeks after the initial X-ray - by then we’d had 3 bank holiday weekends so it was incredibly rapid. Turns out it was a lipoma but their concern was soft tissue sarcoma so, when the have a concern or aren’t sure, they can get things done incredibly quickly!!
