Three teeth out at once? Will I get a general?

I've got three teeth in a row (lower right molar and pre molars) which all now need extracted.

All three are brittle due to root treatment, and all three are broken to varying degrees.

I've been referred to the dental hospital. Will I be able to have a general anaesthetic? I really don't like the idea of having three tricky extractions under local.

Has anyone had similar?

Ask for sedation. I call it la la juice. You won't need a general

I had 2 teeth out at the dental hospital with a local it was fine.
I'm going back next month to get a lower impacted wisdom tooth out with a local. Was meant to have sedation but turns out I'm not suitable for it.
I'm terrified of the dentist but the treatment I've had so far was OK.

I've had two out with local and was fine. They only give you a general if the tooth is hard to get out so would involve him cutting or bone removing so that's often more wisdom teeth that are impacted or growing weirdly. I had a wisdom tooth out under general but because it was stuck in the jaw bone mainly and right next to a nerve. They'll try do local if possible I'd say op x

My DD had three out when she was 11 and just had mild sedation at the dentist. It might depend how difficult they are to extract?

Elieza · 06/09/2022 12:42

I’d vote for sedation too. They discuss prior as you need to have someone with you to take you home and sit with you. They put the drip thing in your hand or arm and it kicks in and you don’t care about anything and feel fab.

I got a tooth out with that when I had an abscess and a local jag wouldn’t freeze the tooth up, quelle horreur! Didn’t feel a thing. But knew what was going on, just didn’t care. Was quite happy and chilled.

MorrisZapp · 06/09/2022 12:53

Ok this sedation sounds good! What actually is it?

Thank you for saying jag 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Very few people get sedation. Sedation referrals I've sent off for very very nervous patients have been denied.

It can be done under local so will probably be local.

Allmarbleslost · 06/09/2022 13:07

No it will be local. My teenager had 4 out with local.

Elieza · 06/09/2022 13:53

Depends how scared you are whether or not you qualify for it?

My dentist is nhs (and in Scotland where I am, hence the use of the word ‘jag’) but not in a dental hospital or anything.

Not sure what the substance is. Intravenous opioids? Dunno. String stuff whatever it is. I can see why drug takers like drugs if they make them feel that good!

You could phone up and ask about the possibility? You need a proper discussion as there are contraindications which could prevent it being used.

LIZS · 06/09/2022 13:54

Dh had a local.

BasiliskStare · 06/09/2022 13:57

I had wisdom teeth out with a local - it did not hurt one bit - the worst I had a was a squeaky sound. If the dentist says a local will do it - I wolud believe them.

Good luck

I’m having two out in a fortnight at a dental hospital. Can’t afford sedation unfortunately (£700!) so will be just having local. Grim. It hey ho! Good luck!

Our GP gives diazapam for this

BasiliskStare · 06/09/2022 15:14

@frozenorangejuice as I said I had 2 wisdom teeth out with a local - & I promise you it did not hurt in my case - hope the same for you .

frozenorangejuice · 07/09/2022 05:52

Thankyou @BasiliskStare 😊

frozenorangejuice · 07/09/2022 05:53

That’s good to know @justasking111 - will look into this!

Penguintears · 07/09/2022 06:04

My 12yo DC had 3 molars taken out under local (to make space for braces).

WhatInFreshHell · 07/09/2022 06:17

I think they use Midazolam for sedation....brilliant stuff!

Whatshallidonowplease · 07/09/2022 06:24

I also had molars out to make room for braces. I had four out at the same time (about a year ago) with a private dentist and was only offered local anaesthetic. It was ok. Not nice, but ok. Best of luck to you, OP.

mumofthree22 · 07/09/2022 08:20

I had 4 wisdom teeth taken out at once under general anaesthetic in hospital.

maddy68 · 07/09/2022 08:25

I used to be a dental nurse. This will be done under local. It's not that traumatic. Honestly. (had two out last week myself )

HazelSwan · 12/09/2025 20:57

I've just had three molars out together. Was an horific experience. Had local anaesthetics but when he took the teeth out, it was so painful, I wanted to scream. And it took a while for the teeth to come out. Just wondering why I wasn't offered sedation. Two molars were next to each other on the bottom row and one molar was in top row. I'm on really strong painkillers but they don't work round the clock. I can't wait to be pain free.

Elieza · 13/09/2025 11:22

It shouldn’t hurt to get teeth out. If it dues it’s because the anaesthetic hasn’t worked. In my case due to an abscess. I had to stop and comeback another time.

The sedation was £35 on top of the usual nhs extraction costs. It was about seven years ago so dunno what it is now.
