How can I eat beans?

I like beans, but they don't like me. They bloat me and give me dreadful wind.

It makes no difference whether I use them straight from the can or rinse them before adding them to stews. I've tried cooking them with fennel seeds, caraway seeds, ginger - very tasty, but still farty.

Lentils and chickpeas also give me wind, sometimes.

I'm fine with fresh beans. It's only the dried sort that are a problem.

Is there anything else I can do to enable me to eat beans?

Build slow? So just a table spoon a day for sample. Do you eat a lot of meat, cheese, ham, bacon.... ? There might be a conflict in bacterias. You have the wrong species.
You could also start adding fermented food, slowly again, to change to more favourable bacteria

my friend swears by buying the dried ones and cooking them in the pressure cooker but i think some of us (myself included) are just prone to wind from such things. I can't for the life of me eat lentils!

So it might help if I try to improve my gut bacteria?

I eat plenty of live yogurt, and proper sauerkraut whenI can get it. I shall try to increase that. Maybe take a probiotic as well.

I don't eat any pork products, and very little processed meat. I want to try and reduce the amount of meat I eat, but would need to be able to eat beans in order to do so!

I eat loads of cheese, but thought cheese was fine for gut bacteria?

Google Low FODMAP Beans.

I have IBS and can't eat beans or lentils, it's a pain (literally and figuratively!). A website suggested butter beans, I'm going to try them soon.

The food you eat will determine the species you have. If you are lacking the species for beans, it might be for an over growth of other species
Cheese is an umbrella of food. The Plastic wrapped square one is just consolidated fat, whereas a slice of Roquefort is a true one.
Cream cheese vs cheddar, industrial milk based spread vs a real cheese.

Your diet already has probiotics, do you eat enough plants to feed them? So vegetables, whole grains
Start slow. A teaspoon, a tablespoon a day.

What about onions, garlic, leeks, do you tolerated them?

Pointless eating things which don’t agree with you.
just eat meat if your stomach feels better for it.
people keep forgetting that we are complex omnivores who require a balanced diet.

@underneaththeash High meat consumption isn't exactly ideal, so if OP want to have a more balanced diet by included a big family of plants, good on her .
Nobody said she shouldn't eat meat.

No it’s so not, but neither is eating things that clearly don’t agree with you.
there’s plenty of other goods to eat.

Mmmm Roquefort...Smile I love just about all cheese, but the 'realer' the better.

Leeks and garlic: fine. Onions in general: fine. Concentrated amount, like onion soup: a windy night. But not the painful bloating of beans.

Veg in general, I don't think I eat enough veg, really. Which is odd, because I love veg.

About trying to eat something that currently disagrees with me, if the disagreement is caused by my body not being in a healthy balance, why not improve that balance?

There's a herb called savoury, (not so popular in the UK any more but was once traditional), which is seen to be good for digestion of beans when eaten together. So much so that its common name in German, maybe French is Bean Herb. Might be worth a try?
