Incubation period of D&V bugs?

Friend came over yesterday morning with her 15 mo old ds, told me after a couple of hours that she'd been feeling sick for 48 hours 'but was sure it was nothing'

She spent last night with violent D&V and a high temp, her ds now has a high temp...

Her LO played with my 14 mo old all morning, and she put out the food for the LOs to eat for lunch, so am not holding out much hope of escaping...

Anyone know what the time frame is for incubation? How long should I hold my breath/line up the Diarolyte/warn other friends for?

It can be as little as eight hours or as long as ten days depending on the bug - sorry I know that's not terribly helpful.

If it's the norovirus you are contagious 48 hours AFTER the vomiting stops as well as during!

If it's gastroenteritis it generally starts off as 24 hours feeling a bit icky then the explosions, then 24 hours later you feel better, but a week or so for full recovery.

Extreme handwashing and not sharing towels is important!

Aha....am hopeful for gastroenteritis then, because she was icky, then exploded for 12 hours, then felt washed out but better.

dd2 had a week-long D&V (first V, then D) in November, and was nearly hospitalized Am dreading this.

Any hope we might escape?!

God, though, 10 days? We're going on holiday in two weeks' time....

Not really - sorry. There are about 600 variants of D&V in circulation at this time of year. If you have eaten or drunk around someone who has it, you're probably doomed. You need rehydration salts, immediately the vomiting starts, get them down your kids, cut out any food, only water (bm in the young). Don't take immodium etc as it can actually irritate the recovering bowel and make symptoms last a lot longer.

Stock up on the bog rolls tonight.

BTW if it is a longer incubating one you will know in a week at most because a fever/weakness will start.

However at least you'll be thinner for your hols

Me thinner would be good. dd2 thinner would be not good at all. Damn and blast.

Thanks for info and advice, WMMC, have bog rolls aplenty and Diarolyte in cupboard, and will fatten kids up as much as possible!

36 hours and nothing yet....

Nope Belgianbun - but spent six weeks lying down after the norovirus reading a book on intestinal diseases (I was unable to go to the bookshop because I was too sick ).

If you've got 36 hours post infection, your chances are really good!
