Weird symptoms - what on earth could cause this?

Right, I have had this happen on 2 occasions now so am worried about what it is. It happened exactly the same both times so need to go to GP and find out what it is but is bizarre so wanted to find out if anyone else has had same thing. It
starts with a loud ringing in my left ear that lasts a while, shortly followed by the room I’m in or place I’m in spinning to the point where I can’t move in a straight line really, or focus on where I should be going this is then followed by overheating, sweating profusely I then am very sick quite a few times (about 8)
both times it has happened we’ve been out so needed to get home. When I lie down and sleep for an hour or so the sickness/nausea passes but am left feeling awful and still dizzy. Will be contacting the gp this week as yesterday was the second time this happened.
has anyone experienced the same please?

Sounds just like some form of vertigo. Do you get motion sick? I think people who get motion sick are often sick with vertigo and those that don't tend not to.

Afterfire · 03/09/2022 10:11

Ménière’s disease? Not sure I’ve spelt that correctly. Hopefully your Gp can work out what’s going on.

inkworks273 · 03/09/2022 10:15

Sounds like some sort of inner ear problem. Maybe a virus or something.

FlowersFlowersEverywhere · 03/09/2022 10:29

Labrynthine vertigo. My husband ended up in hospital with it severely ill for a few days until they managed to relocate the crystals in his ear

Alakazam8 · 03/09/2022 12:40

Thanks for those ideas- at least I can mention them if I need to as ‘I wonder if it might be…..’ I’ll have to get it sorted whatever it is- if it keeps happening.

@FlowersFlowersEverywhere what happened to your husband. Did he slowly get worse? If you don’t mind telling me more- was at the hairdressers when it happened and they offered to call an ambulance so must have looked/seemed bad!

Its worth watching this on the Epley manoeuver and trying it if it's crystals in your ears:

Newuser82 · 03/09/2022 13:52

I was going to suggest an inner ear problem or else a faint coming on? Hope it gets sorted soon, sounds awful.

SpamIAm · 03/09/2022 14:10

Maybe a migraine.

AndStand · 03/09/2022 14:13

Could also be Labyrinthitis. My son and husband have both had that.

Vicliz24 · 03/09/2022 14:15

My husband has Menieres it sounds like that . Definitely see a doctor.

MarthatheWombat · 03/09/2022 14:25

Could be vestibular migraine or menieres, they have very similar symptoms. I have vestibular migraines and saw an ent consultant who did balance and hearing tests. I take betahistine now which sorted it out.

CosmopolitanPlease · 03/09/2022 14:33

Your mention of the hairdresser makes me think of beauty parlour syndrome. Had you been leaning back over a basin?

Alakazam8 · 03/09/2022 19:06

No it was my daughter’s hair appointment not mine so couldn’t be that. The other time I was outdoors at a national trust property.
Is it normal to have ‘events’ of it and then be ok for a few days/a week?

Just read about meniers disease on nhs and unfortunately it fits that exactly word for word- hope it is something else but hopefully GP can diagnose, they are specific enough symptoms which shouldn’t be too difficult to diagnose- fingers crossed.

I’ve got Menieres and have had several attacks like that (not so much with the being sick as I can judge when it’s going to happen now more). Last time I ignored the early stages and puked everywhere in a public place!
I’m on betahistine too which does help.
def speak to GP. I had to have quite a few tests before Menieres was confirmed though.

itsgettingweird · 04/09/2022 08:42

Yes either inner ear something or I'd have said a migraine.

My ds use to get bad migraines and he'd go grey, be confused, have to lay down and would be pretty much unconscious for 6 hours.

His were so severe they suspected epilepsy and also hypoglycaemia attacks.

He grew out of them about 16/17 - as in it happened once or twice a year all through his teens and he hasn't had one since he was 15.

Alakazam8 · 04/09/2022 12:22

Yes I recognised the signs the second time it happened. I knew as soon as the ringing in my ears started but as dd was only half way through having her back to school hair done I just hoped I wouldn’t get any further than the ear ringing bit!!! How wrong I was… literally seeing rooms spinning in front of you is most unpleasant I have to say.
@JustDanceAddict what do you do if you feel it coming on?

@JustDanceAddict what do you do if you feel it coming on?

I can usually tell in the morning if I’m not feeling quite right but if it comes in suddenly it’s hard esp if you’re out. I had a few attacks at my old work and I had to just sit tight for it to wear off, the worst was when well meaning colleagues moved me and I was sick (luckily in a toilet). I’ve only ever been sick 3 x from it in 10 years (had a gap of about 3 years with no attacks)
best not to move unless you’re at home and can easily sit down.
once your ears start ringing you know it’s coming. Try and sit somewhere quiet. Don’t move at all.

Alakazam8 · 04/09/2022 22:54

Thanks @JustDanceAddict useful to know you’ve only been sick from it three times. How frequently do you have attacks? It sounds exactly like what happened to me. Will be going to GP asap to get a diagnosis at least

So I saw gp today and she just said (from reading online info) that she thinks it’s benign vertigo and would recommend that I just come back if I have attacks of it closer together or lose some hearing. She ruled out meniers (sp?) as I don’t think I have hearing loss but from what I’ve read it can occur without and some of my symptoms don’t fit benign vertigo including the ringing in my ear at the start and the vomiting.
Not sure whether to just wait until it happens again and then go back for a second opinion or try a second opinion prior to it happening again. Suppose I can only follow her instructions but a bit disappointed.
has anyone else had these symptoms and been told the same?

OP posts:
JustDanceAddict · 06/09/2022 16:30

Sorry the GP wasn’t more helpful. Ringing ears pre attack is a Menieres symptom and you need proper tests to confirm it.
Now I have an attack maybe once a year - I’m on meds though. I’ve had periods of more frequent ones.

Alakazam8 · 06/09/2022 20:47

@JustDanceAddict what would you recommend doing- just leaving it until it maybe happens again or go back now and insist it isn’t what she has suggested???

Ive had this. In fact I think I have had menieres, Labyrinthitis and BBPV.

It stated out with a piercing high pitched sound I my ears and feeling is spinning lasting a minute or two. Though it happens to everyone occasionally! I'd also get spinning feeling if moved my head quickly like at a junction when driving. It was referred to ENT who said nothing really!! Gave me some tablets if I needed them but was never very clear. Never had vomiting.

A few years later I had horrendous attacks of labyrinthitis. This time I collapsed suddenly at work and was Unable to move my body in the the correct position. I could not lift my head of the floor. I was taken to A and E and diagnosed with labyrinthitis. I could feel a fullness in my ear that wasn't there previously and a dull hearing. I was off work for 6 months. In bed for 2 months. When I walked it was like I was drunk. Lying in bed with eyes shut the room would spin.

Finally I had an episode of vertigo which was like a mild attack for labyrinthine but basically I felt really ill and just wanted to lie down. (I didn't- went to work as per usual, couldn't drive so for a lift, just felt crap!) this I think was BBPV

The problem with menieres is that I comes and goes so when you see the GP or the are no symptoms.

The menieres society is very good online and cover all these. Try the epley manoeuvre.

Sturgeon travel sickness tablet (cinnarazine) help with feeling dizzy.

Thankfully I didn't vomit ever. I'm ok now but I will always have some sort of dizziness problem at some point!

Wish you well op!

Naliny · 06/09/2022 22:34

Pretty sure it‘s Menieres Disease. I have it and know these vertigo attacks only too well. Haven’t had an attack since February touch wood, after starting Betahistine. Would insist on referral to see an ENT asap!
