Teenager tiredness and heavy breathing

My DS13 has just started puberty so has the usual tiredness associated with it that has only recently appeared.

However, beginning early this week he seems exhausted and breathing heavily. He has had diarreah for the last few days. He's been in bed reading for the last few days and says he feels nauseous and can't eat.

I'm wondering if it could be a bug or something. He's never been this tired before. He's had a busy summer of intensive sport, so am wondering if he's just uber exhausted now.

Earlier this week he also had a rash on his thigh and little bumps that look like insect bites on various parts of his body, although I did not get them. Am not sure if they are related.

puberty kickstarts a lot of health issues, could be PoTs if he's out of breath and nauseous, is he dizzy as well op?

Haggisfish3 · 01/09/2022 23:09

I would probably go to gp and ask for blood test to check for anaemia and to rule out leukaemia or the like.

Why on earth don't you take him to his GP? Internet forums are not equipped to give medical diagnosis- end of.

Have you done a covid test ?

The tiredness, rash and upset stomach are classic signs of omicron - particularly the rash in children and YP.

Anotherdayanother2 · 02/09/2022 01:51

I will take him to the GP but as it is in the middle of the night I thought I would ask.

And the severe tiredness only started today.

Yes he did mention some dizziness. He now also has a temp of 38

I would definitely do a covid test ( am a nurse).

Anotherdayanother2 · 02/09/2022 02:50

Thanks for your reply. It slipped my mind to do one as he only had Covid in June, but it is possible to catch it very soon again

Yea it is possible to get it again this soon. Covid test to start, if negative, GP for advice.

Anotherdayanother2 · 02/09/2022 08:24

Covid test is negative and temp has gone down now but he feels absolutely exhausted and has abdominal pain that comes and goes.

Have a GP appointment at 9.30. What tests should I ask for if the GP just brushes us with it's puberty as this is so unlike him. He's the most active boy but falls asleep when just sitting down

There is a tummy bug going round at the moment, could it be just that he’s had a bug and needs time to recover, or do you think it’s more ?

Haggisfish3 · 02/09/2022 08:52

I’d ask for full blood count including ferritin and test for glandular fever.

justaladyLOL · 02/09/2022 08:57

suggest a doctor not a forum

mattressspring · 02/09/2022 09:04

Why would a doctor tell you a 13 year old who is not breathing normally, in addition to everything else, is puberty?

Anotherdayanother2 · 02/09/2022 16:47

Dr did not think a blood test was necessary as said as it had only been a few days the stomach bug would resolve itself.

DS is extremely dehydrated with high creatinine, no infection and no sugar or something so she thinks the diarreah has caused the dehydration.

So he's drank close to a 1.5 ltr of water now and dr suggested lucozade instead of dyrolite, but he's still taking deep breaths and has abdominal pain. Diarreah down to once today.

Blood pressure was slightly low.

My 13 year old boy has suddenly shot up and his voice is getting lower. He came home from football early the other week and he looked terrible with a green tinge. He was sick and vomiting. I’m not sure if that sounds the same though. But really just want to say I hope your ds gets better very soon. X

Anotherdayanother2 · 03/09/2022 21:47

ashitghost I hope you DS feels better. Mine is less lethargic as he's managed to up his hydration, but still can't eat alot, and taking in really deep breaths. Today, he's said that his whole body has pins and needles so I don't really know what is going. Stomach still gurgling like crazy.

Dr says to wait a week and if the stomach bug hasn't resolved will do blood test then.

Oh god love him, he’s going through the mill. I’d tell you to trust what your gut tells you. You know him better than anyone and don’t be afraid to cause a massive stink if you feel intensely that something is just not right. Let’s hope he turns a corner and I hope someone is also looking after you through this.

Titsywoo · 04/09/2022 00:55

My Dd was very tired and kept getting breathless on any exertion and even talking or laughing too much. Was low iron and she is taking a supplement now.
