My gums have really started to bleed badly. I don’t smoke but have been told I have gingivitis buy the dentist. Has anyone over come this?

Dental Nurse here!

completely normal during second and third trimester.

keep going to your dentist for regular check ups and try and get to see a hygienist 2/3 times during your pregnancy.

brush for 2 mins 2-3 times a day about 20 mins after you have eaten, mouthwash (with fluoride but no alcohol) in between brushing (not straight after as it washes off the stronger fluoride that’s in the toothpaste) and use interdental brushes (tepees or easy picks) in between the teeth daily.

mine are really bad at the moment but I’m keeping up with the routine but it’s to do with the hormones!

hope this helps xxx

@grizzlymumma did the OP indicate she was pregnant?

Flossing and Corsodyl

I've struggled with gum issues OP in the past. what I have found helpful is:

  • sonic toothbrush, change brushhead regularly
  • go to see the hygenist regularly (at least 2 x per year)
  • coconut oil swishing once or twice a day for a few mins after brushing (it is amazing antibacterial and helps keep teeth white!)
  • interdental brushes daily
  • watch brushing too hard! It is as bad as not brushing enough.
  • try SLS free toothpaste (make sure it has fluoride). SLS can irritate the gums.
  • never skip on your brushing routine!
  • floss daily as well
  • interspace brush which is a long handled brush with a small tufted head. NOT the same as interdental. Get a soft one and go around the gumline and at the back behind teeth that aren't easy to reach. like this: www.boots.com/boots-expert-interspace-toothbrush-10231943 - be careful - ensure you have a soft one to avoid damage to gums
  • take co-enzyme q10 supplement - so helpful to gums
  • water fasting for a couple of days is great for the gums and healing them due to autophagy that takes place (breakdown of bad tissues / infections) Just make sure to follow the right guidance for fasting - work up to longer fasts slowly and supplement with electrolytes if you need to. Do a bit of research on this.
  • A waterpik can also be helpful, might be worth a try,
  • massaging the gums helps increase blood flow to the gums which helps to clear infections, just a minute or two with fingers / soft brush can help.

I've reversed bad gum disease this way and it really works. Just be careful not to be too harsh on your gums.
