DD nearly 5 got her eyes tested at nursery on friday and i got a letter home saying "dd's vision was slightly reduced in her eye" she's getting refered to the childrens eye clinic.

Would you wait for this appointment or just make an appointment at an optician?

I would make an options appointment. If you call your HV she will recommend the best in your area for children.

I would wait, my dd started wearing glasses at 4 yo as she has marcus gunn syndrome, astigmatism (Sp) and is long sighted. Usually the appointment will come through quite quickly and i think she will probably have to have the eye drops to have her retinas checked which im not sure they can do at an opticians

Wait for an appointment, Clayre. Young children aren't particularly reliable when it comes to reading the letters so they put drops in their eyes to dilate the pupils or something, hence the eye clinic.

I'm not in anyway professionally qualified, hence my vague reply, but both my DDs are VERY long-sighted and have had glasses since they were 3.

An eye test at school picked up poor vision in my DS1 when he was 5. I had a letter home from school saying he'd be referred to the eye clinic and immediately made n opticians appointment trying to speed things up but when we went to the opticians and I showed them the letter they said they couldn't see him and we should wait for the eye clinic appointment. This came through really quickly and we had a really good service with them.

Still went to the opticians to get his glasses dispensed though and took out their insurance so we don't need to worry when he comes out of school with them broken which - with a football playing boy - is quite often!

Thank you all

yeah they are testing eye sight at nursery, i think its so any problems are found before they start school.

she cant draw and is struggle to concentrate when writing so i assume she is straining to see.

thank you i dont know any kids that wear glasses so dont know whats involved, this is a new thing so no idea how long the appointment will take to come thru

hmm not sure, probably go to optician.

ds's sight was poor so i took him to optician myself and he had glasses straight from his hospital referral appmt.
He is 3.

DD2 was referred to the eye clinic as a pre schooler. The appointment came through very quickly and she attended a few times. They monitored the problem and said it would probably rectify itself. It did . I'd wait for the appointment - you can always call the eye clinic and ask how long the wait is likely to be.

clayre · 22/01/2008 11:30

this is a new thing so hopefully it will run smoothly. I started wearing glasses when i was 4 and my sight is very bad, i would hate for her to be struggling if i can do something about it.

id wait for appointment.in my experience the optician will only refer you anytway.2 of my children have had eye problems,dd had lazy eye which gradually corrected itself but still had one eye stronger than other and ds1 had one eye better than other.both went for yearly checks till last year.at appointments they either just had to do same as you would at opticians,ds loved pirate patch at hospital or sometimes they had drops to put in eyes'princess drops to make eyes sparkle' as dd called them!
phone eye clinic.
