Why does my child get sick abroad?!

DS 5 has been vomiting throughout the night and we are abroad in Tenerife.
This is the 2nd time it's happened when going on holiday abroad and I just don't understand what is going on?!

We don't drink their water, wash hands regularly etc.
We've all eat the same buffet restaurant food, and in racking my brains trying to work out how he's caught a bug for the second time.
Thinking back he had his mouth resting on the headrest of the seat in front of him on the plane, then although regularly sanitising eating snacks while touching everything on the plane etc.
Then there's the hotel, maybe he's touched something and hands in mouth and that's enough to catch a sickness bug?
If it was the food surely we would all be sick? The only thing he's eat that we haven't is a few cucumber slices and tomatoes that appeared wet so I assumed washed before.

Obviously with him being a typical 5 year old, he's swimming in the pool and getting water in his mouth despite our best efforts in saying keep the water out of your mouth!

Is this just bad luck do you think?

It's put me off coming away again 😂🙈
I don't know what I'm asking exactly 😂 but just wondered if anyone else has experienced this with little ones and how to prevent it in the future?

Planes are filthy. In fact any high traffic area with lots of people is going to be a germ fest & little ones do tend to put their fingers in their mouths, not wash hands thoroughly and lick things they shouldn’t.

I get sick every single holiday too. Sometimes I think the heat is to blame. All inclusive is terrible for spreading bugs around with everyone using the same tongs etc.

Why don't you drink the ("their") water?

Just child hygiene hands on everything. How did he have his mouth on the headrest?

Anyway yes bad luck and he is probably just always going to have a sensitive stomach. Maybe start some Yakult type drinks.

I've got covid on holiday twice husband didn't. I went on a Nile cruise and was horrendously violently I'll and no one else was was.

Hope he gets well soon it's horrible dealing with it away from home.

Because we never have and I thought it was best to have bottled?

He turned around to see grandma sat behind him and whilst kneeling on the seat to speak to her he put his mouth on the headrest 🙈

Aren't salads dodgy for food problems, maybe being washed in tap water or hanging around? Or is that an old wives tale? I think people assume you can only get food related upsets from meat and fish but it's not true.

I think it's quite possible that your ds just hasn't got used to the bugs that adults can deal with and will grow out of it.

We went away when dc were little and using a swimming pool and my ds was sick and my baby nephew was too. No one else was in the party who was older.

@tobee water is safe to drink on Spain. I might taste different due to mineral content so there is preference for bottled water.

It's Africa, Eastern Europe, most of Asia, central and South America where it can be contaminated. So ice and salad washed in contaminated water can cause a gastric illness.

Norovirus is rife in the U.K. at the moment so likely that he’s picked it up on the plane. Hand sanitizer doesn’t kill noro so it will likely be that he’s touched something and out his fingers on his mouth. If any of the rest of you catch it you’ll know it’s that. If it’s not norovirus then it’s probably because his immune system hasn’t been exposed to as many things as adult immune systems so he’s sensitive to all the new strains of viruses that are in a different country.

NewYorkLassie · 30/08/2022 11:17

If it was Norovirus the whole family would likely have it.

OP is he having any food or drink that he doesn’t get at home that could be having an impact?
