Post op bunion removal

I'm due to have my right foot operated on in October: My bunion is huge, not painful itself, but my squashed toes are (I think hammer toe is the expression) and I've only been able to wear trainers for years:
My big worry is how long the recovery will be: I run every day at the moment, also walk, cycle and swim and I'm generally very active all day: The thought of sitting on a sofa with my feet up fills me with horror and I'm not sure how I'll cope, or my 2 dogs for that matter (DH isn't a great walker)
The surgeon said it would be 6 months minimum before I can run again so I'll lose all my current fitness:
I'm nearly 57 and know the longer I leave it the harder recovery will be: What experiences has everyone else (particularly runners) had?

Hi everyone - just posting a Christmas update! I'm now 8 and half weeks from surgery. Foot still swollen but have been walking without crutches, in the surgical shoe, this past week. Managed a brief walk outside with the dog, too. You really notice walking on outside terrain when you've been walking on the flat indoors for so long. This morning, although the foot still swollen, I managed to get on my wedge mule house shoes - I'm overjoyed, as can now walk properly balanced! Still icing and elevating the foot, though. Next assessment at the end of January, when I should be given the all-clear to drive. (I probably could drive now, if I needed to in an emergency, but work are paying for a taxi for me next month, so I won't push it.)
I hope everyone is doing well and on the road to enjoying their new feet in 2023! X

How's everyone doing now?
Just a final update from me, I'm 3 months post op, foot feels normal, no more physio required and I've started running again: No regrets at all about the surgery, just that I didn't get it done sooner! The break from running has done me good, strength/weight training I've been doing instead has done so much more for my core and overall body strength than just cardio:
I hope everyone else is doing well!

I know this is an old thread but are any of you still around?

I had hammertoe surgery last Summer, and recovered well - after a steroid injection to calm residual nerve pain at the beginning of November it had been great - swelling was gone no pain etc and I started back running, hiking etc.

over Christmas and New Year I’ve been doing a lot of hiking (8-9 miles each day) plus some runs of 5k - easy running mostly flat.

then this weekend it’s suddenly swollen and painful - as bad as when I first started walking more after the wire came out. Plus occasional nerve pain across the toe as well.

Any suggestions on what might have caused this and what I can do ?

No obvious cause other than increased activity and wearing my heavier hiking boots for winter conditions rather than trainers.
