Talk to me about flossing

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 25/08/2022 12:51

My gums are in a terrible state and I know I need to be flossing. I know how to floss, what I don't know and can't seem to find any information on, is when to floss and how often?

Do I floss before or after I brush?
Do I floss once or twice a day?
How soon should I see an improvement? As at the moment I get a lot of bleeding and I really should have dealt with it sooner but I've been distracted by other health issues.

I floss in the evening before I clean my teeth.
Bleeding should stop after a couple of days.

have you seen a hygienist?
that would be a good start.
my dentist/hygienist say that flossing is actually not suitable for some people as the tisk of injury if done incorrectly is quite high.

I use dental brushes (those slightly bent rubber ones).
order of proceedings:

  • rinse with water (mouthwash after fresh garlic)
  • clean with interdental brushes dipped in toothpaste
  • brushing

then just spit out the foam, do not rinse after brushing.

good luck.

it should take 2/3 days to settle.

if it doesn't see a dentist.

I floss after brushing, probably every other day. Maybe it should be every day. I have particular places where stuff gets stuck more often so pay those more attention.

Those little interdental brushes are good if you have gappy teeth or your gums have receded (as you then have quite big spaces between teeth and floss doesn’t do it all).

Agree that bleeding and soreness is normal after a long time of not flossing but will stop soon.

Are you seeing a dentist regularly OP?

PinkButtercups · 25/08/2022 13:00

You floss before you brush and you should do it twice a day but realistically most only manage 1. The best time is before bed at night.

It a waterpik water flosser and be amazed.

It's not a goods as actual flossing but it's better than nothing and helps wife you start with tepe brushes

Floss after brushing morning and night

I seem to be doing this in the wrong order compared with PP, but my gums always score 0 at the dentist so it must be working. I do:

Tepe brush
floss
mouthwash
tongue scraper
brush teeth

I do it first thing, then again after dinner except brushing, which I do just before bed. I generally don’t snack or eat again in the evening.

PestoPasghetti · 25/08/2022 22:18

Do you go to the hygienist? I go 4 times a year because I'm not the best at looking after my teeth at all, and it helps keep things in check. The hygienist will talk you through a flossing routine and the best equipment.

Get some corsodyl toothpaste & floss after you brush. Then rinse and do a little whizz round with the paste again after the floss for a few seconds. Use an electric toothbrush . Brush twice a day. Use tape floss & dental bushes if they work for you.
