My sister's dd2 is 4 months old and has seriously bad cradle cap. It is thick, yellow and now apparantly starting to smell!! !! She has been using Dentinox shampoo, and slathering on Olive Oil but to no avail!! Her skin is rather sensitive too, so she has not used a cream her GP gave her as it contains Peanut Oil. Has anyone got any miracle solutions?

have you tried aveeno cream? i spent 4m massaging with olive oil and fine combing then aveeno cleared it up in 4 days.

Metanium cream got rid of a lot (not all) of my DS's cradle cap. His wasn't too severe though...might be worth a try? Not sure if there's peanut oil in it or not though.

in the end I used Head & SHoulders!!!!! It worked a treat!! I think he was about 6-8 months old. (ooh - is that siren the sound of the parenting police coming to get me?)

Dd1 had revolting cradle cap and a hairdresser recommended heating baby oil in the microwave before applying it. I combed it off and it all went!

I, ahem, just picked it off gradually but maybe not so good with sensitive skin.

I used prescribed peanut oil on dd2 when she was tiny. If you want to avoid peanut oil, olive oil should work just as well.

Used to slather it on then put on a little stretchy bandage like a hat. Did it every evening. Makes a mess of the bed clothes but shifts it.

call me silly, but are the dentinox and the oil cancelling each other out?

iirc dentinox is meant to dry it out so it flakes off and you can comb it out, but the oil will be moisturising it again...

Thanks for all your suggestions - will pass them on to sis!! Can you get Aveeno or Metanium cream in Boots or do you need prescription? Why on earth is it smelling do you think?

You can get Metanium in Boots without a prescription No idea why it might be smelling, sorry!

pointydog · 21/01/2008 17:45

Do you mean just smelling greasy? Or unpleasant? If it's really unpleasant there might be a slight infection.

dd2 is much older now and still gets thick cradle cap (connected to her eczema) and nizoral shampoo really shifts it but not sure of age guidelines.

bossykate · 21/01/2008 17:47

you can get aveeno cream in larger boots stores. i can't think why it would smell unless she has been picking at it and it has got infected? does it look red and weepy?

DD1 had really bad cradle cap- in early photos of her she looks like she has a lot of yellow hair. Oh no, she was actually bald! Tried everything to no avail. She is nearly three and the other day walked in with a clump of hair attached to cradle cap and proudly presented it to me!

DD2 looked like she was getting it just as badly but with her I just used a little bit of sweet almond oil and brushed her head twice a day and, while it never totally went, it never got as bad as DD1. Could be different kids and different amounts but I am convinced that all the messing about with DD1 hindered not helped.

My (one) good health visitor said that as long as it doesn't crack and get infected it isn't actually a problem. If your niece's is starting to smell it would be worth getting a doctor to check there is no infection.
