I broke my collar bone when aged about 9, it was the most painful experience ever

I really feel for him. Is he on parecetamol and nurofen?

frazzledbutcalm · 21/01/2008 13:34

Went to hospital within the hour, was sent home saying nothing wrong! Refused to xray him as he was showing no signs of anything wrong. Basically ds2 let doc feel arm etc and didnt say it hurt. I knew from his expression it did hurt but as ds doesn't interact or speak like 6 year old they wouldnt xray. Took him back on sunday as he'd been really bad, triage nurse reluctantly agreed to xray (her attitude was awful) and the fracture was discovered. He has arm in sling, doesn't want to be cuddled as it hurts, didnt go for wee for 24 hrs coz it would hurt getting on loo, its been awful. He's bit brighter today, thankfully.

Have you got it strapped up to minimise the movement & therefore the pain (sorry if that's obvious!! )

Difficult to keep a sling on a toddler but it might help. Poor mite & poor you!

frazzledbutcalm · 21/01/2008 13:35

He's on both magnolia, its all i can do for him. I feel so helpless.

dd1 broke her collarbone and she had her arm put in one of these which they said that I could then strap to her body if she wouldn't keep it on, or put a tee shirt on top, leaving the arm inside the tee shirt (iykwim)

Give him the maximum dosage of calpol and let him sit wherever is comfortable.

Dd1's healed really quite quickly and she was left with a lump on her collarbone which they said was perfectly normal, and told me it would disappear as she got older, which it did.

And forget all your rules about sweets and chocolates - give him as many as he wants as long as they don't make him sick. And let him watch cbeebies or whatever as well.

Hi Frazzled, my ds fell off the back of a sofa and fractured collar bone too. I slept next to him all night for as long as he needed it and gave him painkillers through the night. I can't recall now if I put him back in nappies just for the duration, but I might have done. I think I may have put him in the pushchair so he was safe in one place for parts of the day.

He healed up fine though

frazzledbutcalm · 21/01/2008 13:45

I've done all of that squonk, healthy eating rules go out of the window when they're bad! He initially had the collar and cuff you've shown but fracture clinic today put a broad collar sling on, it gives more support than the collar and cuff. They said he'd be left with a lump on the collarbone but i didnt realise it might go away - it reassuring to know that.

apparently, the lump is excess bone - when they break a bone when they're quite little, the bone just grows and grows and grows. As they get bigger, they grow into the extra bone, if that makes sense.

frazzledbutcalm · 21/01/2008 13:50

Makes perfect sense, im pleased to know that

poor little love. my ds1 did this TWICE! once aged 2 1/2 and then the other side jumping off a swing when he was 9 - ambulance required that time.

It is soo painful, but they tend to heal quickly, poor little love.

xxx

frazzledbutcalm · 21/01/2008 18:41

Twice?? Please no! He's just fallen onto that side tonight and screamed for a long time i hope he hasn't damaged it further! ds1 fractured both wrists at the same time when he was 10.

poor him

i had to use crutches (due to smashed up leg) with broken collar bone (after being run over at 50mph).... now that HURTS.

I hate it when chidrden are in pain and you cant do anything to help ... is it in a sling? that helped me a bit

Thanks for all your kind words, comfort and support

nannyL - yes arm's in a sling and it has made a huge difference. Don't know how you could ever use crutches with a broken collar bone??!! Agony!

I need to take sling off to wash him, hope he'll let me. He's really smelly in sling after only just 1 night, i didn't thing about that happening!

Aggghhh, my son 2.8 broke his today falling off the toilet

Exactly the same, is in a sling, but don't know how to make him comfortable. Any tips from you frazzled but calm now that you are two weeks down the line?

Hopefully you or someone else will read this...
