Mole removal - no idea where to begin!

I'm considering having a mole removed from my face. Growing up, it was always referred to as my 'beauty spot' (ha!) but lately I've been thinking I'd like to have it removed. It's raised and while it doesn't concern me, occasionally I'll catch it with a finger nail. I think I'd just like it gone now.

Anyway, am I right in thinking this is something I would need to have done privately? I'm assuming it would fall into the category of 'cosmetic' and of course I don't want to add to the stresses of the NHS if I don't have to! Question is, does it need to be removed by a doctor or are there specialists clinics which can do it? I'm getting mixed information online.

I checked with a local private hospital and they wanted 'up to £1300' to do it. Ouch! I don't think it's an especially complicated mole so I'd rather go to some kind of skin clinic but don't know where to start. Obviously with it being on my face, I'm trying to avoid a scar.

Any help or experience from someone who's been through this, would be really appreciated?

I can't help with advice but I'm also interested in the answers, let's hope someone wise comes along. 😁

Sorry no useful advise but watching as I have a large raised mole on my neck I would love to get removed. I found a local cosmetic hospital that quoted £650 which seems like a lot but I'm not sure if this is the normal going rate.

I was reading this thread yesterday, might be helpful to you?

Mole removal from face- any recs? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/styleandd_beauty/4486908-Mole-removal-from-face-any-recs

I have a lump of a raised mole on my face that I'd love to have removed but I can't afford to go private so I guess it'll stay with me a while longer.

Find an aesthetics beautician in your neighbourhood. One who does eg botox fillers etc. Call them up and ask for pricing. Mine does £80 for one mole and £120 for 3 moles removed. I think I also paid about £60 for the private doctor she knows to check the area by digital image that I sent first by email.

Mine is very affordable though as she works from home. Others will cost a lot more. She is outstandingly good as she is an experienced dentist also.

Oh that's interesting, thank you.
What was the experience like? Was it lasered off in one go? Did it hurt/leave a mark? Curious to know what it's like. Smile

I second a beautician, one that does advanced electrolysis. I've had loads removed from face and body with this. A bit uncomfortable when being carried out because they can't use anaesthetic but not unbearable. Much better than a surgical removal which will always leave a scar. Once healed I've got no scarring at all.

totallyaddictedtocheese · 19/08/2022 16:06

Its worth asking at your GP if you can have it removed before going private. I had 2 moles removed from my stomach by the NHS a couple of years ago. My clothes kept catching on them so they were fine about removing them. They did tests on them once removed too, to make sure they were nothing to worry about.

It was very fast and hardly any pain. I am sensitive to pain but even I could cope! There is a tiny red mark after that which heals slowly. Honestly it is over in a jiffy. Though I didn't have any on my face but other parts of the body. Two moles and two skin tags.

My father has a history of melanoma and I had a mole on my forehead that I was worried about. It was very small. Our GP had a mole scan thing which said it was likely benign but given the melanoma history (and the fact we had private insurance via work) he was more than happy to refer me. I got the impression he would have referred anyway, but obviously the insurance helped. The actual procedure was done by a cosmetic surgeon. He had a punch thing that took out a round piece of skin including the mole and then he filled the hole with glue. Apparently a round hole creates a much more natural looking and inconspicuous scar. This was about 10 years ago and I don't know if techniques have changed since then. The procedure was done under local anaesthetic so only the initial jab hurt. The glued hole looked unsightly until the glue and scab fell off. Then the scar was red, like a small acne scar, eventually it got smaller and went white and though you can still see it you have to look for it.

Watching. £1300 is far too much.

I had 2 moles on my face removed a couple of years ago. There were removed using radiosurgery. I went in for a consultation, the Dr said he could do them there and then. It was all done in 15 mins. No cutting, no scar, no pain. I went to the place in the link below in Plymouth, I think he has a place in Bristol as well. My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.

@Tralala33 - this clinic looks fab! Thank you for sharing.

I have a mole on my face which I've been considering removing. It is small and black but clear enough that it's visible in photos. Makes me wonder if I'd have any problems with my passport photo looking different from me if it were removed? Any thoughts on this OP?

I had a couple of moles removed from my neck in about 2012 at my GP. I asked about removing one on my face they said they couldn’t do it on the NHS.

I had a small, raised mole removed from the delicate skin just under my eye in 2020 by Dr Ross Perry in Kensington (they have a number of clinics in London, not sure where you're based).

I considered it for YEARS but put it off as I was too scared in case it went wrong & left a scar or didn't heal properly, and was especially nervous as it was so close to my eye. I did a lot of research and saw Dr Perry mentioned a few times so booked an appointment.

I went for the consultation & he did the procedure there and then, took less than 10 mins. I had to just put some Vaseline on it every day for maybe 10 days until it was healed. The result is incredible, it was like it was never there, no scar at all.

I'd never trust anyone other than a doctor or cosmetic surgeon when it's your face, it's just not worth the risk!

Here's a link to his practice. I think it was around £350 & my only regret is I wish I'd done it years ago!

Catnipples · 19/08/2022 23:11

And yes, I asked my GP first but they won't do it as it's cosmetic.

Sproutingpotatoes · 19/08/2022 23:15

Ok so I found an aesthetic beautician today who is an advanced nurse practitioner too. She will do a free consult and if she thinks she can remove it, will do it there and then for £100. I'm currently checking out her credentials but so far, it all seems legit!

I visited the same clinic last year and had over 20 moles removed from my face and body. Cost about £2k. Best money I ever spent. Dr Ian Strawford was excellent. I had a couple of follow ups for larger moles which required an extra zap when they had had about 6 weeks of healing and were still visible. Scarring is minimal and certainly less unsightly and easier to cover than the moles which I had always been self conscious about.

I definitely want to go back for a few more when I can afford it. His prices have doubled since I got mine done, but it's still so worth it.

I had a large protruding mole on the side of my nose.

I had it removed at a private skin clinic. It was under £200 but I can't remember the exact price.

It was burnt off. Local anaesthetic. It wasn't painful.

Healing process was fine. It took about 2 weeks to totally heal.

I do not have a scar. It's totally flat. I'm very happy with the result

Jennywren1975 · 21/08/2022 09:20

I had a mole removed from my face about 8 years ago. I'd had it from birth, and when I felt a small, hard lump under it, I went to my GP who referred me to an NHS plastic surgeon.
It was removed in a day procedure. My face was frozen up several times and it was cut out. I had 6 stitches and a black eye for a fortnight.

Happymama98 · 24/07/2024 15:38

Hi I know this is an old thread but I’m in the same boat, can I ask were your miles raised and coloured? Can you notice them now?

Holliegee · 24/07/2024 15:46

I had a mole removed from my upper chest - it was raised and changed shape.
My GP did it at the surgery.
