Growth on head - advice (gross pic attached)

Had this on my head since early teens (I think!) It doesn't usually bother me but gets a little itchy if I catch it on a hairbrush. But DH took a pic of it tonight and I didn't realise how big it had become over the years! Is this anything to bother the GP with?

(Please excuse the greasy hair 😳)

I'd definitely go and get that bad boy checked out!! Especially if it's grown, I'd want reassurance that it's nothing nasty. They may well be able to lop it off for you.

LilliaJones · 16/08/2022 21:03

It looks very similar to the hemangioma my DD has. Same sort of size. Was very bright red and when she got to one turned a pale pinky flesh colour with the same grooves yours has. They're harmless (that's if yours is a hemangioma)

Not sure if adults can have them as I think most hemangiomas babies are born with or shortly after birth they grow.

Deffo get it checked!

I've just asked my mum to confirm my memory is correct about not having it as a child. I might be wrong!

I had a cyst removed privately recently. Mine didn't look like yours - it just looked as if I had a marble under the skin and was called a Pilar cyst - but if you are told by the GP that you can't have it removed on the NHS it might be useful to know the cost of private:
Initial consultation £170
Op £469
Stitches out £35

MarmiteCoriander · 16/08/2022 21:28

Can't say what it is, but agree with see GP for reassurance/check isn't not suspicious/potentially take biopsy. Be prepared though, they if its deemed by them cosmetic (despite getting caught in brushes etc) NHS won't remove it.

If that is the case, you'd either need to go private, or contact that TV show the skin clinic/skin A&E where they remove all manner of cysts/pustules/growths 😳

Ooooooh defo needs a GP visit, it looks like a wee mini brain. That must be annoying when brushing hair etc, get it removed.

Supersimkin2 · 16/08/2022 21:31

How to Get Ahead on Mumsnet…

The GP will take that off for you.

popapoppadum · 16/08/2022 21:36

@FannyFifer Mini Brain does get caught quite regularly, especially at the hairdressers who are pretty violent with their combs sometimes. Ouch.

I have the same, it’s on the hairline behind my ear.
have had it for as long as I can remember.
mine is never painful or itchy.

Lavendersummer · 16/08/2022 21:41

Yes I have these and so did my mum. Agree about the hairdresser.
definately see Gp, if big, catching they will take it off

Aconitum · 16/08/2022 21:44

I had one just above my ear that looked just like that but only about half that size. I had it removed years ago by the GP at our local infirmary when they used to do things like that. It was a papilloma.

TrobadoraBeatrice · 16/08/2022 21:45

DP went to the GP with something very similar a few years ago - it wasn't anything nasty but was just in the way. He got it frozen off, can't remember now if the GP did it or sent him elsewhere to get it done but it was pretty quick.

Chocolatecoatedkettlebell · 17/08/2022 16:38

My son has a nevus sebaceous birthmark that doesn’t look like that now but is expected to change to something like that when he goes through puberty. That would tie in with it appearing in your teens.
FYI I went down a very traumatic google rabbit hole when he was diagnosed as a baby so what I would say is yes get it looked at but no don’t be too worried about it. They have massively relaxed the protocol since he was diagnosed

CuriousMarie · 04/06/2025 05:24

I know it has been quite a while, but what ever happened with your situation? What was it diagnosed as? What did you end up doing?

I believe I have the same thing on my scalp and was just curious.
