is it possible to be short/long sighted in one eye and not the other? have noticed that my left eye has perfect sight, but my right eye is not so good, can only read things close up with the bad eye, things far away are blurry, but like i said the left eye is fine, am confused coz i thought both eyes would be the same?

No, both eyes need not be the same. I have an astigmatism in one eye and not the other. My mother is longsighted in one eye and shortsighted in the other. Opticians carefully test both eyes and record the measurements separately, showing that there is no assumption both eyes will be the same.

Blandmum · 20/01/2008 16:48

Yes it is possible. Not wildly common, but perefctly possible

blueshoes · 20/01/2008 17:16

yes. I am shortsighted and astigmatic to quite different degrees in each eye.

Christywhisty · 20/01/2008 22:19

We have just found out my DS 12 is short sighted in his right eye. The left eye is nearly normal. He hasn't been given glasses yet but we have to go back in april to see if they are getting worse.

loopylou6 · 21/01/2008 08:27

thank you is shortsighted where u have trouble seeing things fara way?

theUrbanDryad · 21/01/2008 08:35

loopy - yes it is perfectly possible to have different prescriptions in each eye. in fact it is more uncommon to have exactly the same prescription in each eye. from what you describe it sounds like you have emetropia (no precription) in one eye and myopia (short sight) in the other, rather than one short sighted and one long sighted eye.

I agree with BadKitten - get thee to an opticians, you may need some specs, especially if you drive. HTH.

another qyestion sorry, is it something u are born with or is it something that can develop over time, i am 25

OP posts:
Christywhisty · 21/01/2008 20:10

My DS wasn't short sighted until the latest checkup. I wasn't shortsighted until I was about 20.

theUrbanDryad · 21/01/2008 20:19

it can be either. i have genetic myopia, but it can develop over time.

short/long sightedness is caused by the shape of your eye, usually. and as you grow, so does your eye, and it can grow in a different shape. basically.

loopylou6 · 21/01/2008 22:23

thanks for answering my questions i tend to get myself into a bit of a panic

OP posts:
theUrbanDryad · 21/01/2008 22:38

aww, bless you. have you got a sight test booked?

loopylou6 · 21/01/2008 22:53

no, not as yet, havent been for an eye test for 5 years, last one was when i has flashing lights out of the corners of ny eyes, they dilated my eyes and diognosed me with migraine phenomanor (sp) am scared to go noe though incase theres summit reallt wrong with my eye, like a tumour or summit i know i sound silly

OP posts:
theUrbanDryad · 21/01/2008 22:58

FWIW - what you describe here does not sound symptomatic of a tumour but i'm not an optometrist, and you should make an appointment as soon as you can. Tesco sometimes do free ones.

think of it like doing a pg test when you don't really want to be pg. you have the fear of not knowing and the fear of what might be, but then after you've done it, you've just got the fear of coping with whatever the result is. so the fear of the unknown is eliminated.

i do waffle on. sorry.

loopylou6 · 21/01/2008 23:04

thanks TUD, its ok, i like wafflers, i am one of those myself and for what its worth, your "waffling" has been extremely helpful XX

theUrbanDryad · 21/01/2008 23:10
