oh please give some advice some sage person who has had a tooth extracted and lived to tell the tale.

i had a molar pulled on thursday and it is still very sore and painful today. i was told that the pain should be dissipating 72 hours after the extraction and just wanted to canvass experience. if you have had a tooth pulled could you tell me how long it took for the pain to fully go.

i have been in real pain with this tooth since mid-december, my dentist only got round to pulling it last week and so for the last few weeks i have felt terrible - exhausted from lack of sleep and from taking antibiotics (3 courses), in pain from an abscess and now this. will it ever go end?

Top or bottom ?

rey · 20/01/2008 15:29

Phone your dentist - may need different antibiotics you should not be in pain for this length from my own experience.

dinahmoemum · 20/01/2008 15:32

bottom, second molar in, it's left a big old hole.

It is possible you may have an infection, have you been using salt water rinses, on the bottom all the gunk has no where to drain too IYKWIM.

Also, if it was a big tooth they may have had a job getting it out so your jaw might be aching and not the tooth area.

dinahmoemum · 20/01/2008 15:54

thanks bree. i have been doing the salt rinses regularly and trying not to worry it too much otherwise. this sounds so daft but should i be able to feel the hole with my tongue? it feels pretty deep.

i will try and get in at the dentist tomorrow morning to check that all is healing as it should be.

Oh God yes, I had a molar pulled about 20 years ago and I seriously thought about subletting it to a family of asylum seekers.

FlllightAttendant · 20/01/2008 16:04

Cn you get to an emergency dentist today/this evening?

It may be what is termed a 'dry socket' which is hoprribly painful, it is to do with it not closing up properly, they can sort it very quickly if so but please get it checked as this is not something you want to leave.

It will need sorting out if it is that. The fact you can feel the hole is possibly a sign.

Don't panic but definitely see an out of hours dentist asap x

dinahmoemum · 20/01/2008 16:04

rofl - that's the first giggle i've had about this in ages bree. thanks. i think the pain is possibly as much from the jaw aching as anything else it was a pretty brutal process getting it out.

thanks bree and rey for replying.

...where are you? If no emergency dentist, try your hospital, they have to have a duty dentist all the time. This is classed as urgent, honestly, they know all about dry sockets, they can be hellish.

dinahmoemum · 20/01/2008 16:07

HI FA. had thought it might be dry socket but although i've been moaning about the pain i didn't think it was that bad. however, i will deffo get back to the dentis, if not the walk-in centre tonight then my own man tomorrow.

thanks all.

Look here

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 20/01/2008 16:07

Dina

Personally I would self medicate until tomorrow. You could wait hours to see an out of hours dentist. Lots of wine and paracetamol.

Do you smoke btw.?

dinahmoemum · 20/01/2008 16:22

that's helpful FA much more concise than the info I read. My symptoms aren't that chronic and when i look in the hole it appears to be black and i definitely can't see the bone. dh is refusing to look the big wuss.

i don't smoke bree and i have become expert at self-medicating since this lark began last year so may well take that option. i am taking two paracetamol and two ibuprofen simultaneously at the moment and that is helping.

Sorry that you are hurting Dinah but this thread is giving me the willies. I have to have a tooth out in hospital at some point this millennium (God knows how long the referral will take) and I was dreading it even before I read this...

dinahmoemum · 20/01/2008 16:33

oh policywonk. i am sorry if this has freaked you out. i can't say it was a walk in the park having the tooth taken out but it was quicker than i thought it would be and by far the worst part was sitting in waiting room. honestly, the anticipation is far worse than the pliers. perhaps they will be kind at the hospital and give you a general anaesthetic so you can miss out on the whole thing

If it's a shooting type nerve pain then get some homeopathic remedy called Hypericum...what does the pain feel like exactly? There are other useful remedies but will need a good description of the pain!

policywonk · 20/01/2008 16:40

Yes, I am hoping for oblivion
The dentist said something about them having to cut a flap in my gum

Hope you feel better soon. Drink more gin.

dinahmoemum · 20/01/2008 17:02

hi sarah it is a shooting pain. not too dissimilar to how it felt when i had the infected root.

swooning at the thought of a flappy gum PW best of luck with it.

Oh dinah I had a tooth pulled (I think the same one as you) just before Christmas and was amazed at just how much it hurt afterwards too!
here. I still have a hole , though not quite as big as it was.

sarahmsqt · 20/01/2008 17:11

Try the hypericum! Any preferences about hot or cold drinks?
