Low folate levels

I have been suffering from extreme tiredness and dizziness and my blood test results show I have low serum folate. I have been prescribed folic acid which I have been taking for 4 days but feel no better.
Anyone else experienced this? How long does it take to feel better?

I've got folic acid and iron anemia. It will take much longer than 4 days op. Weeks it will take to get in the system sorry try to eat folic acid rich foods too to help build up the levels a little faster

It's the dizziness which is the worse and the heat isn't helping. I don't know if I will be fit for work next week but feel silly asking for a sick note for something that can be fixed with a vitamin.

It will take 3 to 12 months for improvement, long slow improvement. Gp's words when I started mine.

Folic acid for treatment of folate-deficiency anaemia should be taken for 4 months. It will take several weeks to notice any improvement.

I would recommend that you speak to your doctor or better still a nutritionist about taking the active form of folate called Methylfolate (or L-methylfolate, 5-MTHF, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate). Folic acid needs to be converted before it can be utilised by the body and some people aren't as efficient at doing this as others.
