IBS with haemorrhoids! Has anyone else had this?

Hello, TMI topic including talk of poop so please don’t read if you are squeamish!

so I’m 27 and I’ve had IBS for probably about 8 years now. My symptoms are generally quite soft stools, occasional diarrhoea (pretty much every time I have a day when I don’t eat that well!), sometimes I experience quite an urgent need to go. I do get occasional constipation. I actually don’t really remember when I last had a normal bowel movement tbh!

The thing that concerns me is that throughout this time I have suffered with chronic bleeding when wiping. It normally comes when I’m having a bad IBS episode (ie diarrhoea or constipation) and it’s never huge amounts. I normally only experience this about twice a year for a few days, although I will also see tiny bits of blood if I wipe too hard. About three years ago I’ve had a flexible sigmoidoscopy done because of the bleeding and my other symptoms, and they found internal haemorrhoids but nothing else. In fact they told me they were able to see everything really well and my gut looked very healthy. They didn’t take a biopsy.

For the most part, I can live with my symptoms and they cause me very little pain. Mostly just annoying and embarrassing to talk about. But I do occasionally really worry, thinking what if it’s something more serious like cancer or IBD? Do I need a colonoscopy? But my doctor insists we’ve investigated and we can safely say it’s just IBS with haemorrhoids. I’m going through an episode now and have been reading peoples stories who had bleeding turning out to be cancer etc.. so just fuelling my anxiety!

Has anyone experienced anything similar or got any advice?

Yes, my thrombosed piles were caused by severe diarrhoea. It was the start of my IBS, although it took another 4 months to get a diagnosis. I ended up in Ambulatory Care because my GP thought they were too severe for her to deal with. Surgeons didn’t agree though, and told me to go home and sit on an ice pack!

I went through all the blood and stool tests to exclude other conditions and all were negative, so it was diagnosed as IBS. The really irritating thing was the refusal of both hospital doctors and GPs to believe the piles were caused by diarrhoea. They all insisted I must have been constipated and one GP prescribed Laxido, which I really didn’t need! I had enough diarrhoea without taking that!

Hi, sorry that your experiencing this can't imagine it's very pleasant. I have really bad IBS once and It did actually cause hemorrhoids, I did end up needing surgery, I had a great surgeon called Mr Andrew Clarke. I think your are worried about your IBS and your hemorrhoids I would suggest speaking to someone who has expertise in the area like Mr Andrew Clarke himself! Hope this helped :)

Don’t have the Raphaelo procedure without a great deal of advice I had it on July 11th having been told to expect 2/3 weeks pain. Now 16 weeks on I am still getting burning pain half an hour after BM and at random times. I have been examined by the Consultant told there were three areas that needed to heal so I thought that would be ok. I am healed but still experiencing pain which has set off excruciating nerve pain in my side. I had a nerve block yesterday in an effort to stop the pain in itself excruciating and expensive. It is too early to tell if it has helped but I am still getting pain in my rectum.
You would think in this day and age a simple, safe and permanent solution could be found to this common problem. At the moment I have no quality of life and wish I had tried otc remedies for longer.

Hi have just read your post. Where does MR Andrew Clarke work?

I see Exroid have an advertising campaign in fb and other places they are selling the Rafaelo procedure so anyone who has had a bad experience as I have can now let other people know and they can avoid it at all costs!
