Femoral hernia surgery

Hello guys, just a bit of reassurance wanted please and anyone else’s experience in this would also be very appreciated! I’ve been told by my hernia consultant that I will be undergoing a femoral hernia surgery in the near future, maybe with mesh repair. It will be under general anaesthesia. A lot of the experiences etc I’ve looked at online seem to be inguinal hernia which is in a similar place but I’m having a tough old time looking for folks with femoral hernia surgery experience! 😊

I am very frightened about having the general anaesthetic also.. the last time I had it I was 18 years(ish) old to repair a broken and dislocated finger, and I was a crying nervous wreck! Now, almost 15 years later, I have two children and I’m even more anxious about it, and I know it’s extreme, but I’m scared of not waking up again.. it’s the lack of control, I think, that frightens me 🙁

any experience is welcome, femoral, or any hernia at all in fact! How was recovery etc for you? from waking up to coming home and healing? All info (the good the bad and the ugly!) will be very welcome here!

thank you! 😄😄😄

There's been a lot of negative press about mesh repair. I recommend you look at a Facebook group called Sling the Mesh or Victoria Derbyshires report she did on her show.

Oh goodness thank you so much.. just started watching the Victoria Derbyshire things on YouTube now and I’m already starting to worry.. I will definitely raise my concerns and hopefully this can we something that can be avoided.

thank you again!

The mesh issue relates to pelvic organ prolapse repairs, nothing to do with hernia repairs so don't worry about that

I've not had a hernia repair myself but I work in this area and it's one of the most straightforward surgical procedures, you'll be absolutely fine...the surgeons in our team literally do 6 in a row in a day

I work in theatres and have had 2 hernia repairs myself as an adult so I guess I'm well placed to comment here. I had an inguinal hernia repair about 8vyears ago where they used mesh, the recovery time was about 6 weeks. For a few years after the op I used to get an aching/dull pain in the area when I'd been standing which I assume was due to pressure, but thinking about it that doesn't happen any more really. It does take a while for the mesh to "bed in" so to speak. Overall I'm pleased with the result anyway.

It's a really bog standard operation that they will do many of, and at your age if you've no underlying major health issues having surgery in general is incredibly safe. I understand your worries but they really will look after you 😊

@OneFootInTheGrave91 I came across this post as I've just been told I also need surgery for a femoral hernia and had a bad experience with general anaesthetic about 20 years ago (emergency appendix removal). I wondered how you are now and how the surgery went?
