Please advise me on what to do with a 3 year old with a stinking awful cold...

DS is absolutely full of cold and didn't sleep at all last night. He just kept crying and crying and saying his mouth hurt (I assume he means his throat) and that his ears "kept farting" (that makes him scream) - I think I know what he is describing with that one. I calpolled him but nothing seems to be helping him at all.

He is all limp and hot with bright red cheeks and won't eat anything atm. He will take little sips of water if I remind him. It is the worst I have ever seen him. I can't give him decongestant as he has to use an asthma inhaler when he has a cold to help clear his chest. He has a horribly raw sounding cough (it hurts my throat to listen to him, poor little mite)

I am about to give him some medised and put some olbas oil on top of the stove. I have phoned NHS direct to see if it's worth my while taking him to a walk in centre in case he has a ear nose throat infection, but it doesn't seemt hey cover that sort of thing so I am waiting for the call back from a nurse, which is just over 3 hours apparently.

Anything else I can do? Do kids just get like this with some illnesses? He has not once been completely floored by a cold before now, so I have no idea what to do!

Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks

I would get him checked by doctor either today or tomorrow morning to check for ear infection.
As much fluid as poss, calpol or medised (I find medised better for bad colds) Obviously no nurofen with athsma which is a pain cos it can be used with calpol or medised.

Sympathies xxxx

Oh heck - I didn't know I couldn't use nurofen - in fact I was advised to after he had a febrile fit (oh, ahem, ok he was pretty ill with the virus that caused that too... ). Thanks for letting me know, and thanks for the sympathies.

I will certainly take him to docs as you say.

Its not always the case but dd4 is asthmatic and we were told not to use Nurofen. But obvioulsy doctors may think it's better to have it than not at times
