Have you ever had shingles? What's it like? DH thinks I have fanny shingles

I have namechanged for this.
OK a couple of weeks ago I noticed I had a recurring itch on the left side of my, er, pudendum (so outside, not inside any bits). I didn't worry about it too much because there was no redness or pustules and I thought, just one of those things. It went on for about a week.
Now, in the same place, I have this burning feeling, like neuralgia. It came on yesterday and comes and goes but it is really painful when it's there. It's hard to tell but I think the area is a bit red. It's like a burning bruise and it really hurt if I sit down the wrong way.
DH immediately said "shingles" when I told him.
I'm a bit scared now as I don't want to have shingles but I also don't want to have to go to the doctor and tell him I have it on my fanny.

ds had shingles, and he had a crop of closely placed fluid filled 'blisters'. Very, very painful

shergar · 20/01/2008 14:26

FS (couldn't bring myself to type that out) you really should see a doctor. They couldn't care less about seeing your bits, and this could be something peculiar like a deep cyst that needs treated. It'd be an idea to have a peep into your fanjo too in case the problem lies in there. Go on, steel yourself! And if you don't want to show it to your current GP you could always go to the local GU clinic - they are great on that area and it's all they do all day. It doesn't have to be a STD to go there.

FlllightAttendant · 20/01/2008 18:04

The other name for that is Herpes, which can be treated but you need to see your GP asap.

It might not be that but best to be sure.

policywonk · 20/01/2008 18:07

I'm not a doctor, but is that a common site for shingles? I thought they tended to occur in 'rings' around certain nerves.

Could it just be a big spot?

boudoiricca · 20/01/2008 18:17

I agree with shergar and FA - it's best to get things like this checked out by a medical professional. If you're embarrassed to go to your GP (and you really shouldn't be, they've seen it all before!) then track down the nearest GU clinic.

purpleduck · 20/01/2008 18:17

I have had shingles - thet weren't really painful, but quite itchy, and a bit sore. They tend to follow along your nervous system.
Not sure if THAT is a regular place to get them, but I would DEF go to gp

Good Luck

lulumama · 20/01/2008 18:19

agree with FA, could it be genital herpes? either way , get yer fanny to the quacks, quick smart!!!

Carpetbeetle · 20/01/2008 18:19

All caused by herpes virus. Best to check it out imo.

Blandmum · 20/01/2008 18:25

Just to avoid confusion genital Herpes and Chicken pox are both cause by Herpes viruses, but not the same virus. Genital herpes is cause by Herpes simplex 1 or Herpes simplex 2

Chicken pox and shingles are caused by herpes zoster

lulumama · 20/01/2008 18:27

i bet you always win at trivial pursuits, MB!!

Blandmum · 20/01/2008 18:27

Dh will not let me play any more

and I'm being serious

lulumama · 20/01/2008 19:05

LOL! i am also banned from triv

mummydoc · 20/01/2008 19:15

yes is a fairly common place for shingles - but could be a infected cyst ( called a bartholian cyst) are oyu swollen and red over the swelling ? if so probably cyst , if any spots likely shingles,

Christywhisty · 20/01/2008 22:16

Had them on my left buttock. The week before had been on holiday and bent over naked in the little bathroom and burnt my bottom on the radiator. The next week the shingles came up in the same spot. Felt rotten for a couple of weeks and had a painful lump in my groin from the infection.

LadyOfWaffle · 20/01/2008 22:19

I don't think you are really going to know unless you get it checked out - I think Shingles have to be treated sooner rather than later, if it is that. I have had it twice in the same place (my head) both different feelings - 1st time was very very painful, total agony, the second was more itchy. Can you actually see anything?

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 20/01/2008 22:21

i have herpes on my back - i thought it was shingles but gp said herpes - went quickly with zovirax

Monkeytrousers · 20/01/2008 22:22

Does your DH get coldsores?

But cant really imagine how you wouldn;t have been infected previously by him if htis is herpes though.

lucyellensmum · 20/01/2008 23:11

MB - my DP wont play scrabble with me either

I once had shingles on my bum, and herpes on my foot, at the same time!! It was really painful, my doctor signed me off of work for two weeks, of course i felt fine in myself so went out for lunch one day with DP - my boss was at the same pub

Monkeytrousers · 21/01/2008 09:16

I thought you could only get herpes on mucus membranes? Or is that shingles??

lucyellensmum · 21/01/2008 10:20

MT i'm not sure its either. My DP suffers from cold sores, really horrible ones and he gets them on his face below the mouth rather than on the lips. Shingles tend to start in the trunk, but not always.

The thing with herpes virus is that it "lives" in the cell body of the nerve cells and that is often quite far from the nerve endings where the virus manifests itself, but once you have it, its pretty much always there. When you become run down it rears its ugly head. Exposure to UV can also cause them to flare up.

To the OP, i would go to the doctors if i were you, it doesnt really matter what herpes virus is causing it, it can be bloody painful and needs treatment. I am not sure if you can use acyclovair "down there" so it might be wise to try and get something from the doctor.
