ds2 (8) ill since friday night. high temp, headache and just general illness.

saw doc yesterday who said alternate calpol and neurofen to try and sort temp, was prob a flu type virus and gave us antibiotics anyway in case there was anything else.

seems even more lethargic and poorly today. was hallucinating in the night.

temperature has come down a bit with the neurofen this morning but just tried to give calpol and he just threw it all up.

doesn't want to eat or drink, not even ice lollies or sweets!

am forcing sips of drinks but he hasn't been for a wee today at all.

what do i do? just carry on? or is it a&e?

I think A&E, its better to be safe than sorry. If he can't keep the medicine down that is reducing his temperature then he could be in trouble. I also don't think the hallucenating matter is minor.

SoupDragon · 20/01/2008 12:38

NHS Direct? Although they'll probably tell you to take him to A&E.

CaptainCaveman · 20/01/2008 12:42

You could ring nhsdirect - and they will advise you whether you need to see the doctor again, or go to a&e. Follow your instincts - if you think he needs to go to a&e then take him regardless.

Hallucinating may well be due to the high temp so it is v important to get that down, however, if he can't tolerate his meds then how can you do that? I think I would go to a&e.

SlartyBartFast · 20/01/2008 12:46

have you tried sponging him cool, with tepid water?

cheeryface · 20/01/2008 12:49

yes, was sponging him last night when his temp got to nearly 40

its about 38 now so lower but he keeps saying he's gone dizzy

oh dear, poor him.
are you going to try nhs direct?

cheeryface · 20/01/2008 12:56

i can't decide whether to ring the out of hours service again or go to a&e or whether it's all par for the course when you have flu and i should just look after him myself.

god it's hard this mothering lark

isnt it

FoghornLeghorn · 20/01/2008 12:58

Trust your instinct !
Did you read the meningitis thread ? Don't mean to frighten you but thankfully the mum involved followed her instict and her son is recovering now

belgo · 20/01/2008 12:59

yes, trust your instincts, it's better to go to a&e one time too often then one time too few.

Go to a&e

The hallucinating is 'just' down to the high temp over night. Very common in children. Scary when it happens, but don't worry too much about once it is over.

The taking in little in the way of fluids and not drinking is more worrying. I would suspect that he will be fine and dandy but I would trust your instincts. If you think he isn't well speak to out of hours or A&E. You know your son the best.
