Please Help!

DD had bronchiolits last sunday (1 week ago), and since then will only take 4oz milk or juice a DAY and will not eat any solids.

I'm seriously worried as this has been going on too long.

Is this ok to have such a small amount for a long period of time. I can get her to drink at all when she doesn't want to.

not so much the food but the fluids is more worrying -have you seen anyone during this last week ie your GP?

If not I'd get her to see the out-of-hours service just to be on the safe side.

She may be too exhausted to feed bc of strugglilng with the breathing.

Ring NHS for advice if you arer worried.

Sorry don't know why that posted twice!

shrooms · 20/01/2008 11:50

Is she dehydrated? Is she peeing very often or is it very little? Is she tired and grumpy? If so you really need to go to a & e to get her checked over. It might be that the 4oz is enough to keep her going but best to get seen!

I don't know why that came up twice either!

dooley1 · 20/01/2008 11:53

have you taken her to the GP?

OverMyDeadBody · 20/01/2008 11:57

Is she dehydrated? If you pinch her skin does it bounce back quickly or stay a bit wrinkly? I'd call NHS Direct if I where you and see what they think.

spicemonster · 20/01/2008 12:02

I'd get her checked out. My ds was hospitalised with bronchiolitis and they wouldn't let him home until he was drinking 1/2 his normal amount and 4 oz isn't much

ProfessorGrammaticus · 20/01/2008 12:10

You need medical advice here - while we'll all try to help, none of us really know and no one can see your LO!

Get her checked out.

belgo · 20/01/2008 12:17

I would take her to hospital, she may need a drip to stop her getting dehydrated - she's probably dehydrated already and that can be very dangerous.

My dd2 neede a drip for two nights when she was ill.

bossybritches · 20/01/2008 13:56

Yep -didn't want to scare the OP but I would seriously get her checked out as she must be on the "dry" side by now, if not dehydrated.

Thanks for your replies.
She seems sort of ok in herself, very clingy and moany. She's had a fever all day which settles with calpol. Today she's drunk only 3oz and 1/2 pot fruit at lunch. Refuses finger food.

She's not drowsy, and skin seems to go back ok.
I went to the hospital twice with her bronchiolitis and they didn't really care how much she was eating/drinking, just were really sarcastic to me as if I was an over reacting mother.

She's had antibiotics which finished on thursday, and thought that those might be making her sicky. She does have 4 teeth coming through, but usually with her teeth she still manages at least 15oz a day. Her normal amount is up to 24oz a day.

I'm kinda worried as the most she's had in 48 hours is possibly 6-8 oz max fluid, but dont know how little babies can go on, because surely if she was thirsty she would drink?

lulumama · 20/01/2008 18:29

clingy ,moany , feverish, lack of fluids..needs seeing by a doctor today IMO....babies can deteriorate very quickly, lack of food not an issue, but lack of fluid is....i would take her to the doctors tonight.

NorthernLurker · 20/01/2008 18:32

another vote for a&e here - to drink so little really isn't good - and with a fever as well. Hope she's better soon - but I would get her seen right now.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 20/01/2008 18:33

A&E definitely.

dooley1 · 20/01/2008 18:34

take her back, say she hasn't eaten or drank hardly anything for the last 24 hours. Can your dh go with you to back you up? Be firm - she should be seen really quickly because she is so young.

spicemonster · 20/01/2008 18:35

I don't want to worry you but that's exactly what my DS was like and ended up being carted off to hospital in the middle of the night by ambulance with a nebuliser. It can get worse very quickly - we had been sent home from a different hospital earlier that day.

Please take her to A&E. They'll see you quick because she's a baby.

bossybritches · 20/01/2008 23:41

Did you get her seen PP??

nappyaddict · 20/01/2008 23:45

is she ok?

bossybritches · 21/01/2008 09:10

Bumping for news pp-thinking of you!

nortynamechanger · 21/01/2008 09:15

Does her breath smell of anything? A dehydrating LO can go into keto-acidosis which means they smell of pear drops/acetone - also their urine.

This happens to my LO when he gets ill/dehydrated and he ALWAYS needs a drip to get on top of it.

I would get your GP to send you to the children's ward with an admission letter or go to A&E.

pinkpeanut · 21/01/2008 19:48

Hi everyone,

Thanks so so much. I was really worried last night, I phoned NHS direct. The emergency GP said as long as she was putting up a fight and not floppy he didn't need to see her. I put her to bed, overnight she drank 1oz.

Today she has improved. She's still off her solids, but today she has drunk 13oz which is so much better.

I'm going to take her to gp tomorrow anyway as she has lost 1kg in a week, and if this happens again, I will definitely go to A&E!

Thanks so much again.x
