Temp of 39.8 HELP!

pucca · 20/01/2008 02:24

Ds has had a temp of 39.8 since yesterday morning, i have been giving him calpol and nurofen alternately (every 4 hours) and it does seem to bring his temp down a little to 38.6 (ish) but within a couple of hours it is peaking again.

There is nothing else wrong with him, no cold or anything, could this be caused by teething you think?

He picks up quite alot once he has the meds, but is soon lethargic and whiny again and burning up, i have just spoken to out of hours GP, who doesn't need to see him (he said) he said just to keep on with the meds

Any advice or help with this? its a weird one.

As far as I'm aware you can give calpol, then 2 hrs later nurofen, then after 2 hours calpol and so on (depending on the age of the child of course, please check the bottle).

What we used to do with DS when the temperature was that high and nothing else worked was to run a bath with tepid water and put him in it until the temperature was back to normal.

I don't have any advice Pucca, sorry, but my friend's ds was exactly the same a few days ago, I think she was going to take a urine sample to her gp's to see if it was a urine infection.

I'm sat up with one of my dd's who has a temp too, she has finally fallen asleep in the pushchair next to me.

Hope your ds is okay, and your night isn't too bad.

Have been told by docs the same - alternate 2 hourly, if he gets any worse then I would go to a and e but every child is different with what they can tolerate. My ds1 is fine at that temp, ds2 is not. You can also wipe him with a flannel soaked in lukewarm water, give lots of sips of water, ice lollies also good if not drinking. Can you get an emergency appointment in the morning? hope he gets better soon.

Yes tepid sponge him, leave him just in a nappy,
Any discharge from his ears? swollen glands in his neck? smelly urine? recent vaccinations? slapped cheek syndrome?

Thanks everyone

Its a nightmare isn't it?

He is a bit grumpy and off colour, his cheeks are bright red thats why i thought it might be his molars coming through, but surely his temp wouldn't rise this much, he fine really no other symptoms, just this high temp (and feeling like you do with high temp) its just his chest, neck, face thats red hot.

Any rash?
If not check out slapped check symptoms on google.

pucca · 20/01/2008 10:15

No rash but red cheeks, but think that is with the temp being quite high.

He still got the temp and is shivering this morning, is it normal to shiver?

to bring his temp down you can strip him, lie him on a cotton sheet and sponge him with tepid water. Stop when his temp drops to 38 so he doesn't get a chill.
