Another tonsill question - is it worth having them out in mid 30s?

Anyone's life been improved?

Had mine out in my early 20's and it made a huge difference to me. Even now I am still grateful to have had them out - they were such a nuisance. infections every few weeks, permanently swollen. Good riddance to them!

Agree - got mine out when I was 27.

Definitely worth it. Just wished I'd pushed and got them out earlier.

Worth the pain then?

I'd say yes. I'd had a fair few bouts of tonsillitis (sp) with lots of time off work and, like badkitten, they'd become permanently swollen. They were huge and (TMI alert) lots of food and stuff would get trapped in them. I had a constant really bad taste in my mouth etc

Getting them out was just relief.

However, I had some major jaw/mouth surgery when I was 23 which had a much longer time off work and much more pain.

So I'm afraid don't even recall pain being an issue with the tonsils. But that's prob that compared to the other op it was a walk in the park!

Yes I'd say so - I had mine out when I was 22/23 and haven't been ill since (15 years ago!). It made a huge difference. You feel rough for a couple of weeks after the op - I got an infection and was off work for about 3 weeks I think - but it was fine overall and I literally haven't had a sore throat since. Sorted!

I had mine out at thirty - totally worth it. I'd had months of tonsillitis and they were permanently swollen (about the size of small plums - honestly) and scarred. It was the right decision. Pain post op was never as bad as the worst of tonsillitis.

I had mine out last year at grand age of 38, and it was soo worth it. Every cold turned into tonsillitis with temperature, was having one week off work a month, eventually it just didnt go away.

After the op it was very painful for about ten days, but no worse than bad tonsillitis. Since then I have had no colds, no sore throats, no temperatures, nothing. And I have been able to get back to the gym and have lost a stone - hurray! Definitely worth it if you are bad with it.

But the GPs really really dont like referring you for it and I had to beg mine for about a year. You really have to make your case to them, but once I saw the consultant he took one look with his torch and said they had to come out. NICE, the national body who advise the NHS, have recommended that tonsillectomy be decommissioned (ie they dont do it anymore) because they say there is a lack of clinical evidence base. But everyone I know who has had it said it made a huge difference to their quality of life.

Make sure you keep a diary or list of all your sore throats, time off work, medications etc to build you case if you decide to go for it.

I really wanted to have mine out when I was 10. Wanted the time off school.
