Private full body MRI then going NHS question & haeamotogoly

One of the family goof awful blood test results they have been referred to
the haeamotogoly dept as an urgent referral - takes around two weeks.

Questions - the first appointment, any tests carried out?

If MRI is required, would that be another 2 weeks?

If someone was to go for a private MRI, full scan and took results to haeamotogoly consultant - would that speed things up or would they say they need their own MRI?

Are all or any MRI clinics approved and by whom and could these be used to pass information as above

Thanks.

Have you any idea what is suspected?

It is likely there will be more blood tests, and quite possibly a bone marrow biopsy and/or lymph node biopsy.

There may be scans (CT, MRI, PET, ultrasound) or X-rays, depending on what is being investigated. I'm not sure that going privately would make much difference - if there is a real prospect of malignancy then things can move very fast. But if that's not the case, then as long as you've spoken to an NHS clinician so you understand which scan they want, and looking for what, then it might be helpful

Try to stay off google!

But if you must, go to Blood Cancer UK. They're very good, their information is reliable and they have a helpline if you need it.

The main diagnostic tests are all blood tests, including liver and kidney function ones. Bone marrow biopsy (done under local anaesthesia) is likely, and scanning may also be indicated to check bone marrow appearance (for myeloma) and bone (to see if there has been any damage)
