Oscular migraines after having a baby

I had a baby 2 weeks ago. 4 days ago my right eye vision went and looked like a kaleidoscope. Since then in 3/4 days the same has happened. Today it just went for 5 mins and no pain after.

I spoke to the gp yesterday and he gave me painkillers but I'm not in too much pain, so trying to avoid for now as breastfeeding.

I'm at a bit of a loss ;( I've never had anything like this before and it's really quite scary when im looking after a newborn. I wondered if anyone had any advice?

The eye that gets the vision loss is also weaker than normal and I'm struggling to read text on a white background as it keeps going out of focus.

My ocular migraines are hormonal, so I'd imagine two weeks post partum, it could well be the case with you!

I feel your pain, they are so disruptive- must be very hard with a newborn to care for. All that works for me is a couple of paracetamol as soon as I get the blurriness that turns into the kaleidoscope, then I stop trying to read/watch anything and just sit until it passes

I’d avoid the GP and go to an optician instead. Tell them before you go that you’ve had the migraines and they’ll take a look. They then have the resources to refer you to a specialist through your GP surgery.
I’ve had one of those migraines before, many years ago now. I only had the one. But it wasn’t pleasant and I did panic I was going blind. The optician was very reassuring. But as I said, I only had the one migraine and vision loss, it didn’t continue past that one day/time. You really are best off speaking to a specialist.

I get these about twice a month , often more and occasionally in both eyes although normally it’s in my left eye . I don’t get any pain , it’s just a weird inconvenience and not triggered by anything that I can work out . It started very randomly a couple of years ago and I’m mid 50s .

@MomwasCasual sorry you get them too. At what point in your cycle do you get one?

@DIMooney thanks for the advice, I have booked the opticians on Wednesday, although it's just specsavers so will see what they say

Just curious if you checked your BP? I had raised BP when giving birth and for a month after, so had to monitor it. They kept asking me if I saw anything funny with vision.

this Sounds like a change since the birth. See optician and go back to gp if it continues or you get symptoms that don’t resolve. Sometimes there can be clotting issues that occur during and shortly after pregnancy.

I second this. What's your BP?

Thanks @Albgo and @SamPoodle123. I've had my blood pressure checked by the midwife and gp and they've said it's fine.

Hi, I’ve had migraines since DS was born, almost 7 years ago. Never had any before then!

confusedlots · 01/08/2022 18:31

I got this when I was pregnant (have never had it at any other time) so I think it can be hormonal. Hopefully it will settle as your hormones settle.

ditalini · 01/08/2022 18:53

Yes. Mine are hormonal and started postpartum with ds1.

I've never had them loads, but they were more frequent and severe whem pg with ds2 which was annoying as obviously needed to keep going in to get blood pressure etc checked to be on the safe sìde.

Actually I haven't had one for a while (touch wood!) so maybe that's something to say for being perimenopausal.
