Do your kids get enough exercise?

There's lots of stuff in the news at the moment about obesity/ junk food/ kids and exercise.
Official recommendations are that kids should get at least an hour of exercise a day.

I know they get playtime etc at school, but I'm sure mine don't get enough during the week. And DS1 is a bit of a bookworm/computer lover so he's not naturally to be found playing football in the garden.

It does worry me though - anyone got any tips to 'up' the activity levels?

ours slump in front of the tv for an hour or so as soon as they get in from school, now that the nights are drawing in

a 20 minute walk to the shops/playpark after school could be good if shops and playparks are near you..running around the house playing chase (but it might drive you nuts after a few minutes) swimming once a week after school??...do they do any after school sports clubs Mo2

Only DS1 is in 'big' school - DS2 is still in nursery. However DS1 does after school club twice a week where they sometimes play outside. No organised after school sport yet (not till Y1)

swimming on Sat
sometimes cycles to school with Daddy on the tagalong
walks home one day with au pair (quite a long walk - too far for everyday)
Park etc mostly at weekends (again, not walking distance from the house)
I think I really need to nag DH to take him to the park/ swimming more on the days that he picks him up from school

that sounds quite a lot already imho..

Maybe you're right? I did think about putting my pedometer on him for a day and seeing how many steps he got to - sure it wouldbe tons more than me!
Only thing is I know he would fiddle with it/ break it/ lose it...

Luckily my dd is at a school that does PE every day except for one day when they go swimming instead. On top of that she belongs to a swimming club which practices once a week; does a ballet class once a week and goes to Brownies - walks there and back and they play physical games.
