Infection after hernia repair

I’m wondering if anyone can offer any reassurance and similar experiences regarding my mom’s situation. She had a hernia repair two weeks ago. She was really unwell before and the hernia was apparently blocking her bowel. She was in and out of hospital a few times before they operated. They tried to push the hernia back manually but it didn’t work for long.

Ten days post operation she was rushed back into hospital with swelling around her stomach and feeling unwell with a fever. They suspected the beginnings of sepsis.

She’s now been in hospital for five days and feels no better. They have drained her stomach twice and got loads of infected fluid out but it seems to return. She’s on an IV general antibiotic and they’ve said they have sent some of the fluid to the lab to find out which antibiotics will target the specific infection.

She’s terrified she will need to go back to theatre. She’s very fed up and upset and now there is Covid on her ward and we can no longer visit. She has many other health issues such as colitis and is on an immuno-suppressant drug so no one is really surprised that she’s picked up his infection.

I’m finding it really hard to reassure her as I don’t really know what’s next and what the likelihood of further surgery might be or the timescale of her being in hospital is. Apparently the consultant said to her today that ‘we’re not out of the woods yet’ which has really worried her. We haven’t been able to speak to a doctor for a few days and we are getting everything second hand from her.

Does anyone have any experience of anything like this? I’m worried it will go on and on. Is it just the case of waiting for the correct antibiotics or could it end up being more serious than this?

Thanks.
